I'm always interested in such posts. In my own extended family, female gamers outnumber male gamers. My wife, a sister, niece in law and three great nieces all play both figure and board games. |

+1 Yesthatphil If you ever find yourself across the table from a woman. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Many are not super good. But, the good ones are lethal. |

When I first got married I attempted to teach my wife to play chess. Everything was fine until I explained how the knight moved. At that point she stood up, accused me of making it all up, and stormed off. She then she has refused to play any type of game with me. |

The spousal unit just looks at my efforts, usually only at the urging of our 7 year old grandson, says they look pretty and leaves it at that. |

Could much of the reason why there are not many women wargamers simply be that not as many women are interested in military history when compared to the number of men that are? And if one is not interested in military history, do wargames have much to recommend them as pure 'games'? Probably not – lengthy, often complex rules that are almost impossible to memorise; long preparation time before one can play, and games that are often not very entertaining if you don't appreciate what they represent. |

Fair point, Armand. I don't know much about the numbers of women involved in those, and as my own interest is historical wargaming, I focused on that. But all wargaming began as games of military operations – contemporary ones for military training and Little Wars, then gradually portraying different historical eras. The off-shoots of that you mention may still – where women are concerned – 'suffer' from the connection to military history. Of course, Games Workshop sought to avoid the issue by trying to rebrand Fantasy wargaming with their figures into 'The Games Workshop Hobby' – though I doubt their motivation was to make it more appealing to women! |

My wife and I have been playing Borg command and colors boardgames since we hunkered down in February. We started with Tricorne basic, then moved on to the French expansion. We are now playing Ancients basic. We have expansions 1,2 and 3 as well. I converted my miniatures to fit on the game board. My wife is really enjoying it and is vicious at times.. Very competitive and audacious, but she is starting to learn and develop strategy. |
