Once I have had a proven vaccine. I'm not expendable, I'm not stupid and I'm not going.

You wear a mask to try and protect others. You depend on others to wear a mask to try and protect you.

Ventured out to buy a needed part at a local hardware store. Not a single person, besides myself, in the store was wearing a mask. Neither customers, nor staff, all males.

I'll not depend on others to do the right thing. A convention of over weight, older and less healthy males is not what I'm willing to risk.

AuttieCat22 May 2020 10:22 a.m. PST

My $.02 USD,

When it is fairly safe to attend! I enjoy gaming, but don't wish to risk catching Covid-19 and giving it to those dear to me or myself.

Very similar. Went to Home Depot to get hardware for a repair. Some jerk without a mask steps RIGHT next to me.

Even without a vaccine I'll be getting back to normal most likely in 2 years. I think that is how long it took the 1918 flu to run it's worst. By that time we either have a vaccine or as much immunity as we are going to get. I won't just be staying home till then but avoiding large gatherings.

All of that is based on statistics at the time.

My gaming Group are antsy to game but we are all high risk types so we wait yet.

A convention is a risk but with required masking and gloving it would seem doable. Our local con is in November and I hope for a decline in the disease by then.

Onward through the Fog!

Not without a vaccine.

Bowman21 Jun 2020 7:24 a.m. PST

Well Nigerian researchers has announced that they have made a vaccine based on various genomic samples collected across Africa. We'll have to see if this turns out.

Two concerns: one is that it will be at least 18 months before it could be publicly available, and secondly one cannot know the efficacy until after that.

War Scorpio21 Jun 2020 8:56 a.m. PST

Now.

People waiting for a vaccine, see ya if a few years, if ever. You want to take a hurried vaccine, multiple doses from what I hear, and follow-up's periodically?

Everyone can make their own choice. In fact President Trump just announced it is to be "voluntary". I for one, will never take a Chinese Wuhan Virus vaccine. Don't want Mercury, Aluminum, Formaldehyde, aborted human fetal tissue introduced in my body. Why should I, haven't had the flu in 20 years. I take vitamins, exercise, and am in good health, not taking any prescription meds. People should be building up their immunity, and get back into the public, working, shopping, and enjoying life again.

However, if you want to take it, perfectly fine with it, go ahead.

Now

But that will not happen since had another Convention cancel.

Dragonflight – A Board Gaming Convention that was suppose to take place in August.

So many individuals have brought into the hype of COVID and are filled with Fear.

I am not one of those individuals.

@etotheipi

Have you heard anything yea or nay re Guns of August? From the Virginia War Museum's website it looks like they are open. ODMS' web page says visit their Facebook, but I dont do FB. I'm not sure there's anything there TBH.

Any 411?

Did you guys know the FDA just approved a drug that reduces your chance of getting COVID-19 by 5X? It's trade name is called Wearamaskasshole. Side effects include mild inconvenience, possible victim complex, fear of people thinking you are a sheeple, being ostracized by your anti-vax plandemic bros, and the power to stop your own asymptomatic transmission as this country stubbornly dives right on into that second wave.

Check with your doctor, or really anyone, to see if Wearamaskasshole is right for you.

War Scorpio26 Jun 2020 4:11 p.m. PST

For a lot of people, it's perfect. Thanks for the post, we have to have a conversation from here.

Well done.

Tremendous actually.

I'm stealing this, but I'll give you a dollar every time I use it.

Here in MA, we were a certified hot zone from Mid March to late April, averaging 1500 positives/150 deaths a day, somewhere along the way, our governor made it MANDITORY to wear a mask in public, I'm proud of my state, we had hardly any "No way, this is Murica, I have my rights!!" morons, people complied and as of the past three weeks, we're now at 150/30 or so, we've SLOWLY reopened in the past three weeks with no spike in numbers.

The ONLY difference was mask wearing.

IF he lifts the requirement, I'm still going to wear one, my girlfriend with Asthma and my 88 year old Mother matter to me.

Yeah, the antimask/antivaccine crowd slays me.

You just be you, keep on keeping on, putting yourself and more importantly, others around you at risk.

Gods speed to you.

From Mithmee …

It is safe now and has been since March.

Surely this is hyperbole at a minimum.

pvi99th28 Jun 2020 4:10 a.m. PST

Interesting to see that since it is so safe to be out there without a mask, that the number of cases are rising again now that states are reopening. Also interesting to note that Joe Biden says he would use executive power to force mask wearing. Obviously someone feels it is important to do.

kcabai28 Jun 2020 10:58 a.m. PST

Also of interest: is the fact testing is on a significant rise, fatalities are plummeting, hospital and ICU visits are down.

I would also suspect Biden has an ulterior motive. Haunted by "Lying Dog Face Pony Soldiers" he strives for that day.

pvi99th28 Jun 2020 6:08 p.m. PST

Houston hospitals are at 100% for their base ICU capacity according to multiple news outlets.

link

kcabai29 Jun 2020 7:20 a.m. PST

I am sorry, my mistake. I should have clarified that the statement was based on the US as a whole. I am sure you can find at least one other example to fit into your narrative. You could look here: covidtracking.com/data

Illinois is at 373 Covid cases in ICU out of 3,850 staffed beds. Also we have 193 Covid patients on ventilators out 5,942.

The multiple news outlets you site refer, to ONE hospital. Texas Medical Center, which is at 97% ICU usage with 27% of that figure for Covid patients. link

There are 520 additional Covid patients in ICU compared to this same day in May, in Houston.

ICU bed usage in Houston (see chart) has been running in the 90 percentile since mid May. So this is only brought to our attention now to prove someone's point. tlink

To live in such denial of reality must be pleasant. I have friends who've lost loved ones due to this, I'm sure your gung-ho attitude is cold comfort to them.

pvi99th30 Jun 2020 10:15 a.m. PST

Bellerophon, thanks for your well stated and more importantly, meaningful response.

It just seems that reality does not matter to some.

kcabai30 Jun 2020 11:34 a.m. PST

Reality is neither Gung-Ho, nor cold. It just is reality. (BTW you do know that the base meaning of Gung-Ho, means "Work together")
Texas Medical Center says 445 ICU beds are being used for COVID-19 patients, and 3,148 beds are not currently in use.

More here: link

holien01 Jul 2020 4:09 a.m. PST

Hi Kcabai,

Great link and really interesting to see how the hospital is presenting it's data.

Just some observations about the data. The 3148 in unused beds are not ICU beds. (Figure now 3332 as of 29th June)

Normal configuration of ICU beds is 1330 in non pandemic times. These beds are being used by 1294 folk so at non pandemic times they are close to capacity.

The hospital of course can re purpose beds if they have enough equipment to make them ICU capable. At a push if it gets really bad they can have a total of 2207 beds configured to ICU.

ICU requires different staff levels and equipment which stresses the hospital in a way they are not geared up for. So empty beds is not the whole picture when dealing with ICU and Pandemics.

Folk in ICU with Covid can be in ICU for over a month, this extra demand is what is worrying for hospital staff, let's hope Texas don't exceed the 900 capacity they have spare. BTW spare does not really represent a fair phrase as you have no idea what compromises have to be made to get them set up….

kcabai01 Jul 2020 6:08 a.m. PST

While one cannot argue there have been an occasional Covid ICU stays for over a month. It is the rare exception. From the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

As of June 24th for the data is ICU Length of Stay

7 days (Median)
25th-75th %ile: 3-14 days

sccmcovid19.org

holien01 Jul 2020 6:18 a.m. PST

Thanks Kcabai I think that is why I used the phrase "can be"

The bottom line is capacity and the Hospital is being stretched beyond normal capacity.

It has plans to deal with the exceptional situation it finds itself in and can add another 677 ICU beds. I hope these are not needed.

I hope people have a speedy recovery and do not need to stay in ICU at all.

I hope the medical teams can cope and are supported for the work they are doing in exceptional circumstances.

We are all hoping for the best, while we can also prepare for the worst.
