I've been asked a few times to do a horse painting video, so here it is !

I discuss equipment, paints, techniques, figures etc so have a watch if you fancy a go at the alchemy of oils.

Fantastic video. I posted a few questions on youtube but I will repeat there here…

How long did you wait after you wiped off the oil before you added a varnish and painted the rest of the horse's furniture? Have you ever compiled a list of oil paints that you feel work well with the various acrylic undercoats you use? Given your experience using 20 or so undercoats and 8 oils it would be wonderful to know what combinations you feel are better or need to be avoided at all cost. Thanks again!

Many thanks Syrinx0

The drying time post wipe is obviously variable around how much oil you use, room temperature etc but is considerably less than an unwiped figure. I leave mine a minimum of a week before I start using acrylics for reins, saddle, white markings etc. I would give it a couple of days minimum in a warm room.

The problem area will often be the recesses around the harness as this is where the deepest amount of oil paint sits. If your unsure try a test patch. It's never a problem for me, the big selling point of this method is speed of painting so I paint in batches of 50 to 100 horses so they sit around sometimes for over a year to be painted.

As for the colour matches, I will add a section on the blog post later today so I can reference people from other sources to it.

Hope that helps

Thanks Ken. I don't have quite as many horses to paint but a few days or a week absolutely won't impact my normal painting speed. Always great to leverage other's experiences with different techniques.

Thanks alot Ken for taking the time to do the video. That was very informative. The results are very pleasing. I am going to give it a go.
I was looking at the horses in your English Civil War section. What acrylic base and oil paint combinations do you use for black and various shades of grey? Thanks for your time.

Hi Tony,

I have never been able to get the effect I want with black and grey horses using oils so I do those with acrylics.

I haven't tried it for a while so might give it a go with the next batch of horses I do.

No way I will ever call this method "painting" with oil paints. Painting with oil paints is done using a paint brush and nothing else. It allows you for instance to do "dappling" so that you can merge colours seemlesly. This is only an example that makes "painting" another experience than the one in the video. For "painting" with oil or acrylics or any other paint, one understands using a paintbrush to do the job.

Ray,

Pretty sure I painted the acrylic and oils on with a paint brush, in fact you can see me do it in the video lol.

I wiped the paint off without a brush, I also used a spray can for the primer, shock ! Good job I didn't use an airbrush for the acrylic base !

Always looking to improve my poor standard, have you got a video tutorial of your figs ?

BelgianRay, what do you say to all those canvas oil painters who use rags, sponges, and pallette knives in addition to brushes? Are they not painters?

Just wanted to chime in and say that I love those horses and that I love to see people painting with oils. It's really an awesome medium that doesn't seem to get much attention anymore (though James Wappel on YouTube has been giving them a lot of love lately).
