Hi folks, does anyone know where Washington's Royalist dragoons deployed? Saw them in the OB but can't find them on the maps I have. There are allusions to Gorings wing but I'm not sure. Your help be appreciated on their location. Thank you for your time and help. |

Hi Takeda, We aren't really 100% certain that Washington dragoons were there, though it seems very likely as they were part of Rupert's forces earlier in the campaign. Probably they were part of Byrons and Rupert's wing of horse. Unfortunately the contemporary deployment sketches dont show them by name but I'd imagine they are some of the 'musketeers' in support of the horse regiments in Byrons wing. |

I think Takeda's proposal is the closest we are likely to get. |

Alas, we don't know. As Timbo points out we don't even know that they were there, although logic would suggest that they were. Arguments for both Byron/Rupert and Goring wings, but nothing definite. |

One of my favorite battlefield visits, took a bus from York to Long Marston and spent the afternoon walking it back in July 1994. |

Thanks for your ideas it gives clues as what to do with the mystery unit. Again thank you for your input. |

Might they have lined the ditch in front of the Royalist centre? |

Good idea Timmo. Could be! |

You know….. I thought about that and wondered. With the numbers for Gorings wing and the fighting that occurred I was leaning to put them there or let the Royalist players deploy them where they want in their deployment area. Who knows? And thank you for your continued ideas. |

The other alternative is they were absorbed as cavalry; the Royalists, did seem to have a habit of converting their dragoons into cavalry (and occasions regular foot) |

Thank you KYPD38, that is a great idea! I think you've given me a plan. |

KYPD. An interesting idea, but I think unlikely in this case. They were certainly serving as dragoons on Rupert's march north, as they are mentioned as such in the Storming of Stockport. They do seem ultimately to be converted from dragoons, but to regular infantry, not cavalry, during their time in the garrison of Worcester in 1645-46. Regarding Marston Moor, as they were part of Rupert's army marching from Oxford,I think it extremely unlikely they served with Goring's wing. |

@mollinary, they fired the first (and only shots) of the 'storm' before the Parliamentarians ran away. I was wondering if perhaps they might have tagged along at the back, so to speak, fighting mounted. Pure supposition of course. |
