On a scale of 1 (lousy) to 10 (masterful), how would you rate your brush control?

Eclectic Wave13 May 2020 12:49 p.m. PST

It used to be a 7. 35 years later it's about a 2.

9, when I am inspired.

Then: 8+

Now: varies from 4 to 6

Timmo uk13 May 2020 1:01 p.m. PST

8 but sometimes I surprise myself and in those moments a 9.

With the arthritis it might be getting into negative numbers. It was never very high at my best.

About 5 for me, it used to be better, but age is the great enemy of endeavour!

Currently about an 8 when I'm doing well, like in the middle of the day (that's now; why am I doing this instead of painting?). Mornings are for spray painting and not just because there's no wind. I can do rough brush work, like base coats and complete-figure washes, at night, but my control gets worse as the night wears on.

I did some interesting work while high in my youth, and am somewhat interested in seeing what I could now, especially with marijuana being legal in my state, but work requires focused analysis, and that's kind of the opposite mental state, so I'll have to wait until I retire.

Slow Oats13 May 2020 2:43 p.m. PST

I'd say 8. I'm by no means perfect, but I can make the paint go where I want it.

Yesthatphil13 May 2020 2:52 p.m. PST

10 at the moment … purple patch for painting – if my eye can see it, I can paint it (so good natural light is a joy and a bonus)

I would say I'm a 16 – that's a 8 but I need to do it two times to get it right.

In my prime, about a 9…. today… 6ish

Depends on the task. And current fatigue or frustration.

6, 7, or 8

Managing to get some detail done right by using the brush sideways, with the length of the bristles on the miniature.

About 7, interrupted by random spasms of 1.

Huscarle14 May 2020 2:23 a.m. PST

It's deteriorating as I get older, used to be a 9, but now down to about 7 and sometimes as low as 5 (especially when I'm trying to paint eyes)!

advocate14 May 2020 5:26 a.m. PST

2-3

Syrinx014 May 2020 9:37 a.m. PST

At best it was an 8. Now a 5 on a good day and I no longer try to paint eyes.

dapeters14 May 2020 10:06 a.m. PST

Okay if after coffee and before 5pm

If we spend much time trying to control our brushes, in the end, do they not end up controlling us?

Timbo W14 May 2020 10:33 a.m. PST

About a 2 currently, I'm relearning after a dodgy eye issue. Position is OK but depth is a bit of a guess at the moment!

A solid 5, edging towards a sketchy, 4, as I grow older. Fortunately, I am a Minwax Dip'er, so "brush control" is not overly important. That, coupled with the fact that I only care what the results look like from 3+ feet away, and my advancing years matter little, for painting results. Cheers!

About 9 … been painting toy soldiers since I was 10. So if you do it long enough you generally get better. evil grin

Fat Wally19 May 2020 11:11 a.m. PST

Probably an 8 with my left hand, and 6 with my right.

von Schwartz30 May 2020 6:15 p.m. PST

Used to use Round-Up, worked really well.
