"Recent events in the Persian Gulf have refocused attention on U.S. Navy interactions with Iran, and have drawn scrutiny over the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy's (IRGCN's) aggressive harassment of Navy ships. Whether or not a change to the rules of engagement is announced following the President's recent direction by tweet to "shoot down and destroy" offending Iranian vessels, it is important to consider how monumental that change would be, and how unpredictable its follow-on effects.

After so many years of dangerous harassment incidents in international waters, it may seem reasonable for the United States to respond with force, decisively demonstrating U.S. resolve and the country's commitment to the principles governing freedom of navigation on the high seas. No need, they've already started to sink their own ships :)

Starting a war is not a good idea. Remember Tonkin! Especially wars we can't win.

Considering that the US is now energy independent, maybe it's time to pull our ships out the the Persian Gulf. Other nations can patrol those waters as they see fit.

If they attack shipping and act like pirates, then sink them.
Prevent your losses by inflicting damage to them.

If they attack shipping and act like pirates, then sink them.

Westerners don't even do that with actual pirates like those caught near Somalia.

The Russian Navy on the other hand is far more effective with permanently ending pirate careers:

Personally I think the pirate strongholds would be a great place to test fuel air explosives.

"violent escalation would be counterproductive to strategic aims in the Middle East"

Really? Our current administration seems to want a confrontation with Iran. Or as a second best result, the collapse of the mullahs.
