"Madrid, in September 1812, is in a waiting rhythm after Wellington's departure for Burgos. The intention of the English general is to keep the Portuguese army away and later return to Madrid and face King José I, who is strengthening himself in Valencia with the armies of Suchet and Soult. The Governor of Madrid is Spanish General Carlos of Spain and the region is controlled by English Hill.

In this letter a father writes to his son, a soldier of the Castile Lancers under the orders of Julián Sánchez, the situation in Madrid is well described:…"

Thank you, Tango. My college Spanish (1960-61) is rusty, but I admire the beauty and clarity of the hand writing.

Also, I did not know that Carlos d'Espana was governor of Madrid at that time. He commanded Rey, Zamora and Voluntarios de ?Navarra? at the battle of Albuera, under Blake and Beresford.

As 83, I see the names of some great old friends: King Joseph; Suchet; Soult; Daddy Hill; Carlos d'Espana; and Julian Sanchez. I am an "equal combattan" admirer!
