Are there any campaign histories as good as Gill's trilogy on the 1809 campaign against Austria? I mean a modern work, based on modern research into primary source material, and as well-written as Gill's trilogy. Thanks. |

Possibly not, but please define "modern." The older I get, the more slippery the concept becomes. |

I enjoy Robert R. Arnold's books on Napoleonic battles. His website is napoleonbooks.com. I have 6 of his books and have re-read them all. If you are speaking only of the 1809 campaign, then there is Crisis On the Danube and Napoleon Conquers Austria, the two books I first read by Mr. Arnold. He also is planning to come out with a book on the 1806 Prussian campaign hopefully by December 2020. I am anxiously awaiting it. You can buy them all on his website and I think on Amazon, also. |

James Arnold "Crisis in the Snows" and "Napoleon's Triumph" are superb. His "Marengo and Hohenlinden"is also great. Martin Boycott- Brown's "Road to Rivoli" is also outstanding. Not the easiest to read but Nafziger's "Lutzen and Bautzen", "Dresden" and "Leipzig" are loaded with tons of info. Duffy's "Eagles Over the Alps" is excellent. To name a few. |

By modern I mean based on scholarly research rather than old tropes. |

James Arnold's books on Eylau and Friedland are superb. Some of the best Napoleonic books I have ever read, and that is quite a lot. Pricy but worth every penny. I bought them both last year and love them. Road to Rivoli about the 1796-97 Italian Campaign is also really good, and I got that last year as well. Napoleon 1814-The Defence of France is another must have book for a Napoleonic buff. I got that last year along with the other books and have re-read it 20+ times, it's that good. If you like books on individual battles, then don't miss 1805 Austerlitz by Robert Goetz, The Battle written by an Italian about Waterloo, Digby Smith's 1813:Leipzig or The Battle of Borodino by a Russian historian whose name I can't remember at the moment. I just ordered yesterday the second volume of Gill's Thunder on the Danube after it was recommended on here and I can't wait to read it. |

I would say right now Gill is as good as it gets. His endnotes are worth the book alone. I have been able to find more new research from his endnotes than any other book other than Incomparable by Terry Crowdy. I am more focused on the men who fought in each regiment than the campaign, but what exactly are you looking for? Regimental histories? Situational reports or just an overall look at the campaign. Saski is old, but reading through it with google translate has some amazing reports from the officers that fought. My personal favorite is Colonel Meda's report after a skirmish. Great small details!
This is a nominative status by battalions for the 3e Ligne for April 1809 that I translated recently using the XB347 Administrative des corps de troupe XB347 3.Ligne 1809 and the Situational Report April 1809 2C 506. This is going into a future add on to the already great regimental history of the 3e Ligne. |

Forgot to add that Gill has a book coming out on May 27th for the Battle of Znaim. |

MarbotChasseurs As far as I can see, Gill's book on The Battle of Znaim, which hopefully will be an equally great addition to the 1809 series, is being advertised as being available on 30th July? |

MarbotsChasseurs I have just checked and you are right, since that is what Amazon USA is stating. However, I was going by the Amazon UK site, which still shows it as not being available until 30th July. I don't mind waiting because I have so many unread titles. Looking forward to it though. |

Gazzola, I got my book yesterday and after reading a few chapters I really am enjoying this extra book. I believe Mr. Gill could write a book on each battle and I would buy them all! He takes a deeper look into the battle and allows more time for the story to develop through the telling of regimental histories, archival after action reports, and memoirs. Highly recommended! Michael Amazon UK are still having it displayed as not being available until 30th July. but from what you say, just like his other titles, it will be something to really look forward to. And I do believe Father's Day is approaching, so if anyone asks me if there anything I would like, a pre-order request will be top of my list. |
