There were Platoon-sized bases/camps/forts in different areas, but does the hive have any info on their design/construction? Did they have differing functions? Were the necessarily beside villages/hamlets? Were there company-sized bases other than FSBs? |

Unfortunately this is one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions. Some bases were very temporary and amounted to nothing more than lots of shoveling, sandbags and some wire. Some bases grew in to small cities. And everything in between. If you google images of vietnam firebases they do have a general shape: rings of wire and trenches surrounding the guns. The shape is adapted to the local terrain. FSBs were obviously on hill tops as were many other installations. But that assumes there are hills nearby… Maybe if we knew why you were asking you could get more input? |

That all sounds about right. I can see a Plt or even Co. setting up a hasty or even deliberate defense. Not a base per se. Infantry units would pull security on FSBs, etc. And as noted an FSB or any defensive position generally is going to be in a 360. Using terrain to your advantage, etc. Here are some good photos … link Note these are not normally a small position. There is FA and at times armor there along with Grunts, CEs, ADA, etc. The FA is there to support the Grunts, CEs, armor etc., on offensive and defensive ops. Fire Bases were spread out all over the countryside generally. To be able to support each other and primarily to support any unit engaging the enemy, etc. |

My post from yesterday has disappeared, as has at least one answer…odd. I'm looking for examples of small long-term camps/bases as per the one in James D McDonough's book Platoon Leader. |
