here is the next Marine , this time a M60 gunner standing upright shooting. Would this be possible without supporting the gun on a wall etc for support?

I am not sure if this chap is resting the bipod on the crack in the wall, but the perspective suggests not and the first recoil it would come off anyway. Equally of course he may just be posing and not firing, but somehow I suspect he had better things to do in the Citadel.

It would take a big guy…..

Ok thanks for the picture

looks like a posed shot for the camera.

Accuracy would suffer firing from the hip/shoulder, but that often wouldn't matter since suppression is the main purpose of infantry fire.

If firing from the shoulder, you'd really have to lean into it to cope with the recoil.

Maybe someone with hands on experience can confirm or refute this.

Probably, but *shit* happens in a firefight …

Generally yes, as well as you could do advancing fire with the troops online. With the M60s near each end of your assault line. To clear an OBJ at very close range after the target has been suppressed/attrited.

If firing from the shoulder, you'd really have to lean into it to cope with the recoil.
That is why normally the M60 was given to some of the bigger troops in the squad. Like some of those big corn fed country boys or Samoans, etc. Those are who you want to hump that pig. thumbs up

You could always spot whoever "humped the pig" by looking at his arms!

Probably staged. I say that for 2 reasons.

1) he's not concentrating on anything; his expression is too relaxed
2) Ammo guy is standing with his head above the wall. Not real likely in an actual firefight.

He's a Marine 0331 (helmet) pretending to be John Wayne. No spent shell casings or links. No steam coming off the barrel. Rear sight is down. I'm sure he impressed his girlfriend back home.

We gave the M60 to the smallest guy, he made the smallest target. Once the gunner is hit, someone else needs to pick it up.

Really good assessments of that picture. Anyone sticking his head above a wall In the Citadel at Hue must be very confident that Nathaniel Victor is not about! Loved Wolfhag's comment contradicting everything we "thought we knew" but makes perfect sense!

Yes, in many cases heavy weapons draw heavy fire …
