Curious as to the opinions of those who have played both. Of course the fact that there is a JRII and JRIII further complicates the question. Look forward to your comments.

Johnny Feb sounds like a male model

I have played both sets and would recommend either as giving a good game. Personal preference currently is Picketts Charge also by Dave Brown (author of Guns at Gettysburg)

Picketts Charge is way better than Guns at Gettysburg

historygamer03 May 2020 6:48 a.m. PST

How so? I generally favor rules with a more tactical feel.

historygamer03 May 2020 9:15 a.m. PST

And how are they better than Johnny Reb?

Trajanus04 May 2020 9:27 a.m. PST

Help! Two questions at once! 🙂

Dave Brown wrote Pickett's Charge to replace G@G as the mechanics were pretty dated They play faster and are less clunky as a result. Here's an interview with the author.

Can't help you on the Johnny Reb front, never played them unfortunately.

Couple of links here. To a read through and then a play through reviews I did when PC first came out four years ago that might help.

Thanks. Still would be interested in hearing from those that played JR

I have played all three games mentioned and was involved in the play testing of picketts charge. I for one liked the flavour that JR gives in terms reflecting the acw and I know myself and other testers were keen to put that flavour into picketts charge.
JR is of its period with lots of markers to lay down and a very complex play sheet. Charges are complex to execute and can end in extremes sending units four foot across a table in one move.
PC and Dave's approach is to streamline mechanisms, but creating a complex game which retains the flavour of the period. I retain a soft spot for JR, but for a good easy rule set picketts charge is my go to set.
