Odd that suppression is missing from a set of WW2 rules – does anyone have a simple house rule for suppression using RF?

Surely suppression is for skirmish games? I RF the smallest manouvre element is a Company. Not sure that a full Company would put down suppressive fire?

Suppression by larger calibre weapons is in the rules.

Seems like real suppress and move tactics are missing form almost ever ww2 miniatures game? Suppression always seem obligatory and bolted on. For a deeper integration of suppression check out the counter based game "band of brothers screaming eagles". :)

Mr J,

It's probably best to define what we mean in a wargame by suppressive fire.

The term is used quite a bit but is it really just a fire order followed by movement?

Esp. as I'm not sure that there was ever a word of command that stated "suppressive fire" in the British Army, though of course things may have changed since the early 1990's and I could be wrong!

My first thought was the same as Nick's. The basic unit is a company.

Am a bit confused, there are rules for suppression in Rapid Fire. Infantry, cavalry and deployed guns test for suppression if targeted by indirect fire by guns over 80mm or fired on/bombed by aircraft.

Fireball Forward and I Ain't Been Shot Mum include it. In FF any non-phasing unit can be pinned till their next activation. In IABSM suppression is a natural sequence of the combat mechanisms.

Indeed. When you are manouvring whole battalions, the unit of suppressing fire tends to be battalion or regiment sized artillery shoots. The rest of it is just indivdual sections and platoons plinking at each other and it is factored into the combat results.

Battlegroup has supressive fire as one of its capital mechanichs.
