"Centuries of European domination of North and South America began to erode and eventually mostly disappear when a courageous group of English subjects signed their names to a proclamation written by Virginia slave-owner Thomas Jefferson on the 4th of July 1776. The world would change forever when that declaration was signed…"

The only problem with the article is that it was the Spanish that aided the newly-minted United States, not the Mexicans. Seems to me that there is an agenda here and not merely semantics.

Don't know Hanson or Huntington but this article is drivel with a political bias. The authors shape and shoehorn their rehashing of history-telling to fit their agenda is pretty obvious.

Agree-you are absolutely correct-well said.

Drivel indeed. And character assassination in the bargain when he discusses Hanson and Huntington. Good call, Brechtel.

Galvez certainly contributed to American Independence, but why "Mexican" and not Spanish?

I know little or nothing about Huntingdon. But I do not consider Hanson a good historian. He should stick to the Greeks.

Wow! I think VDH is awesome. Is it just his politics? or what?

Brechtel19829 Apr 2020 1:41 p.m. PST

Why am I not surprised.

Seeing how Mexico did not become independent until 1821, I fail to see how Mexicans helped the USA win independence during 1776-1781.

doc mcb29 Apr 2020 3:28 p.m. PST

Kevin, what objections do you have to VDH's work?

They didn't. The Spanish did as well as the French.

That article is all over the map and is more a political screed than anything else.

>But I do not consider Hanson a good historian. He should stick to the Greeks.

His history is fine--there's a distinction to be made between his more political columns and his actual published history, which is very good for the most part.
