Printing Scenario Maps with Poster Software

You've got a scenario map, and you need to create some hills. Is there some way to just print out the map in very large scale, so you can trace the outline of the hills you need to build? The Editor finds out...

My figure count is growing and I need to find suitable storage. I like the really useful boxes and got an A3 size one thats 70mm high. Thats ok for most figures but cavalry or banner men cause a problem , really need 90mm upto even 120mm but I can't find an A3 size box that big. What size really useful boxes do people use ? ( if I get too high it's just waisting storage space)

Whatever you choose, you have to think about managing vertical.

For example, you can get all your infantry in a 1" box except for the command stands. So do you buy a 2" box to make room for 6 flags? Or do you lie down the command stands and put them in a little foam?

I'm a big fan of them too

What I looked for was ones that would be different heights, but stack together nicely. Their website doesn't show this very clearly, but the picture that shows stacking boxes has the sizes (in litres)

I decided on the 11l/21l for storing and transporting

The 4l/9l were a close run, but I wanted to get more figures in a single box

Figures with pointy sticks, banners and so on are a problem. If you only have a couple in a box, then a really tall box is wasteful of space. For one or two probably better to lay them down, without foam or so on to support them

The other thing to look into is that there are companies that sell wood or foam inserts for really useful boxes

I have over 80 RUB's.

Mostly 4l and 9l but quite a few bigger ones, some are 19l.

I have quite a large number of very small ones. Each holds about a squad of 25mm figures really well, so I find that they're, well, really useful boxes.

I use something similar manufactured by Sterlite (in USA). They are made to store letter size (11' x 8-1/2") paper. The interior dimensions are 12" x 9-1/2" x 2-7/8" [exterior dimensions are 14" (35.6 cm) x 11" (27.9 cm) x 3-1/4" (8.3 cm)]. link I get mine at my local Target store. I also have some larger Sterlite ones (about 5.9 liter size) that I use for document storage right now. They are very similar in appearance to the RUBs.

I can pack a large number of 25/28mm troops and an even larger number of 15mm troops in one. Plus I use them to store my Wings of War/Glory biplanes (see link ).

And as others have said, whoever makes them, plastic boxes like these are "really useful." Plus the "letter" size boxes I have fit three nicely into a one-cubic foot cardboard file box for transport.

I use a combo of the 4l and 9l. They stack well together and for the larger one I can print out inserts

And dont forget the inserts from Sally 4th.

You can also make inserts from foam-core board (use cocktail sticks to strengthen the glued corners and edges)

Thanks, And there's me thinking no one will monitor that forum.
@ Waco joe, where did you get those trays from, do they stack, do you just put them in bigger plastic boxes?

I could look at lying the command stand down. I magnetise the bases, so maybe I could put a metal sheet on the side of the box, and stick the commands round the edges.

Next question, in the time of Coronavirus, anyone know where I can buy them from with a sensible delivery time ? Ryan do cheap shipping but I can imagine it being weeks until they arrive.

I have some of these from Sterlite.

But as the collection grows I may go back to the ones used by ColCampbell as I'm running out of space. I never thought of magnetising the side of the box to secure stands with flags.

I have a ton of RUB's and I use 4L almost exclusively with my 15mm armies—i really haven't found anything that is too tall for these. Where I have run into trouble is with 28mm armies—the 8.1L is my go -to size for 28mm, but any cavalry with a vertical lance, or infantry with pike, plus oddball fantasy items, are too tall. I haven't found something with more vertical space that stacks well with the 8.1L. The 9L stacks with the 4L, as said above.

I started using the A3 boxes. They are OK for my command stands (just !!) and (25mm) cavalry but I find them a bit heavy once they are full. Awkward to get down from the loft, or to handle any distance away from the body. If you go for the A4 boxes, there are tall, 4 or 5 inch high ones that are cheaper than the 2" ones. The Sally forth inserts will then allow for two layers of troops. But then they will be heavy again !!

HappyHiker26 Apr 2020 12:35 p.m. PST

Love the sally forth inserts, but the price would soon add up. I reckon I'll stick with the A3 (10 litre) boxes, and put magnets on the side and lie the command stands down. Managed to get an A4 9 litre box from Asda which will hold cavalry, and stacks ok with the A3 one. Thanks for the suggestions.

@HappyHiker

I designed the files in 3dSlash. They do stack a bit, I put in a peg and notch but the way they fit in the box it is probably not necessary. The files are on thingiverse: link

I use 8.1L for most 28's, but artillery and infantry without tall flags or long spears will fit fine in a 4L RUB. Haven't tried the 9L RUB's.
