I'm trying to find a flat white in a spray can to replace the discontinued Walmart item. I have used Kyrlon and Rustoleum, but while they dry flat, I would prefer a "toothier" surface as I use it as a primer. Does anyone know if any of the home improvement stores like Home Depot, Lowe's, or Menanrd's has one? Thanks. Tom |

Auto shop acid etch primer. Wear a spray mask though. If you spray on a hot day you'll get a more toothier surface as the paint just about dries in the air as it is sprayed. Spraying on a warm day acid etch should give you an excellent surface on which to paint. I go on: warmer than 66F but less than 60% relative humidity. I won't spray when it gets hot (above 77F) as I don't like the really toothy surface – personal preference. I know the figures I give sound really pedantic but over the years I've found materials and methods that I've fine tuned to suit me and give the results I want. |

Any white car primer will do |

+1 to Timmo -- you need acid etch primer to really stick to the figure. Normal white paint is just a basecoat, and will flake off over time. Where I am I cant find white acid etch primer -- only grey or black. So I prime in gray, and then use GW white spray paint for my base coat when painting Austrians and other troops in a white uniform. |

I find the Rustoleum 'flat white primer' to be good and just about ubiquitously available. |

I don't understand why Colorplace, the Walmart paint, stopped their matte white. They still do flat black. The primer is very good, but I am starting Austrian units and I am not priming them black. I ordered the Rustoleum flat white. Hope it works. One tip I heard of was to put your spray can in hot tap water for a few minutes. It is supposed to help with the mixing of the paint. I'll try that too. |

Thanks to all for the advice. I now remember there is a flat chalk white spray by Rustoleum. I could be wrong and it might be Krylon. Has anyone tried that? Tom |

I recommend Tamiya primer. Sprays so clean you can do it indoors with just a shoebox. Toothy finish. |

Uparmored, I'd like to try this, is the Fine Surface Primer you use or the Standard Surface Primer. Given it can be used inside I'm presuming it doesn't smell? |

I use the Tamiya fine surface primer. It has a smell. I set it up under the kitchen exhaust fan to help with that. Then an upended box or shoebox for the model, then newspaper around that to catch any overspray/residue (will be minimal or non existant with Tamiya) I tried the same thing with GW primer and my whole apartment was coated in a fine layer of primer and it stunk for days. The Tamiya cone of spray is much tighter, you have more control, almost like an airbrush. The actual paint tends to actually go on your target, instead of into the air. Still I wouldn't spray long bursts, use short bursts and take a decent pause in between each burst. |
