This is Derp …

Derp, derp derp derpity derp derp.

He is made from a bit of leftover air dry clay and some random bits (bead, tentacles, orphaned plant leaves …) as a lark. I am deciding how to paint him. Any suggestions?

Here's a coloringbook page of him, if that helps express your innermost derpings:

Green/natural just doesn't seem to do him justice.
I would go with a purple-ish blue. Maybe a light to dark fade from the tips of the tentacles to the body and a light to dark fade from head to toe, or eye to leafy legs.

Blue and purple seems to be the idea. That's cool. I have lots of blue, purple, and burple (bluish-purple) amorphous tentacled monsters.

Unlike the bearded gentleman wearing a dark turban and wearing out an ass in a nearby dimension, this creature has managed to indicate that he does indeed recognise his elbow, but has now forgotten the first part of the arrangement. In order to "inspire your troops", be they wavering and tentative conscripts reluctant to engage, or engagingly repugnant constructs waving tentacles, it is essential to remember Co-ordination. Know your Assaye from your Elba.

He may have already been nuked.

He should be holding one of these in his grasping appendage.

Oh, I also found you an alternative color scheme….
