I'm after a bit of help about the Battle of Stow on the Wold.

I'm currently researching a visit to the battlefield and whilst working out OS grid references and postcodes for various places of interest I was alerted to an 'artillery fieldwork 370 metres NNW of Park Farm, Cornbury Park' (it was a pop up box of 'places of interest near here' when I was looking at Stow on the OS website).

I can find no further references to such an earthwork anywhere, I've trawled through the listings at English Heritage and found nothing (if it exists it may not have a listing), and scoured aerial photographs but can't see any possible earthwork remains.

So anyone know anything about it? Possible local story?

Any reference to it in The Last Army by John Barratt (Helion)?

thanks in anticipation

Thank you, but no mention of it on the Battlefields Trust site Stow page

The location suggested has no involvement in the location of the battle, I would imagine it would have been a defensive earthwork (assuming it exists)

By coincidence I received a copy of the Barratt book today. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but a quick glance doesn't show any mention of fieldworks.

Here is a link to the National Library of Scotland OS 25-inch map from 1892-1914, which doesn't show anything either. You can scroll around or zoom in an out, as you obviously know exactly where you want to look

Thanks Aviator. First impressions of the Barratt book? Has it got the awful colour illustrations so prevalent in the more recent Helion volumes?

Aviator21 Apr 2020 8:01 a.m. PST

The illustrations are stylised, but not the worst! Seems to be the same person doing the maps as for the English Civil War Times magazine (Caliver). I got it on offer from Naval & Military Press for £5.99 GBP so not complaining. They have big savings on a lot of books at the moment so worth a look at their website.

Cheers, will have a look for other books.

Just thought I'd got a good deal on a copy for £9.00 GBP posted.

And it's even cheaper on there now!

It is a listed site which I have linked below along with an older report . Hope that helps

Interesting! Probably not involved in the battle as Cornbury Park is about 12 miles away from Stow on the Wold. Still I think I may have staggered over the Cornbury earthworks as it's on the site of Wilderness music festival.

Wow! Thank you Mr Steve.
Clearly my Google Fu has let me down, coupled with looking at the wrong Park Farm on the maps. I was looking at Park Farm about a mile east of Stow. Quite how I missed it in the Historic England listings I don't know. I even searched using the very specific term 'Civil War artillery fieldwork 370m NNW of Park Farm, Cornbury Park' both on HE and Google.

Timbo, agreed. Even if it was located on the wrong Park Farm I would have excluded it from the battle, putting it down as a generic defensive feature, rather than something thrown up quickly before the battle.

No problem, I fortunately had a few spare moments free in my otherwise busy schedule to try and help.

I occasionally contribute to a friends blog and I recall he visited The Battle of Stow back in May 2018, There may be something of interest in his article that you could find of some use for your visit.

That looks like an interesting battle to walk.
A good day out (when possible).
