… things I wish people knew about my life.

"The day my husband swore in to the US Marine Corps, his veteran grandfather gave me a book that had belonged to his late wife: "The Marine Corps Wife," published in 1955.

This marked the first of many sources I came across in my quest to figure out Military Spouse 101; as a new, eager (and, frankly, naive) military wife, I was desperate to *prepare* myself for the life that lay ahead of me…"

Being the "military" part of a very long marriage, I can only say that the wives who persevere are truly the glue that holds a military family together. My wife, bless her soul, held our family together, albeit during a peacetime career, for twenty years in the Army.

Frankly, while it might be a nightmare to track if they did anything, the compensation/rewards spouses get are zero. Actually, a negative impact on their own careers usually. The US military does a very poor job even recognizing spouse sacrifice.

Not entirely. A friend of mine's father was a career Air Force enlisted man. His parents divorced after he retired. His wife got part of his retirement, military insurance, (can't think of the name), and access to the PX and commissary. He has since passed, but she still gets these benefits.

Few long service members of the military could do it all without a supportive spouse, and most commanders know it. They usually try to let everyone know what they think on the matter but --- they think and speak military.

I was already a Captain when I met and married my wife. She was with me during Desert Shield/Storm, Korean tour (we lived in the middle of Seoul), multiple times in command, and mobilization for the pulling bases out of Iraq.

She is not "Mrs Colonel" but she was sometimes called the Colonels wife (I think nicely – not snarky).

All those wives who stay through all the sacrifices deserve our thanks as a grateful nation – for helping our Soldiers, Sailors etc be able to do their part with confidence.
