Hi everyone,

I'm nearing the end of painting my 1/2400 ADW fleets. Since I will having around 30 ships aside, ~60 in total on the board, I was looking for rules that simplified fleet actions.

I've played KMH a few times with large Napoleonic fleets, and really enjoyed how it handled large engagements.

Does anyone have any suggestions for home-brewing some added rules or changes into KMH to give a more mid-17th C flavor?

If not, I was also looking into using WarArtisan's "Admirals" rules, does anyone know how well the set handles larger engagements, without micromanaging 30+ ships?

Thanks!

Jake

Well, I may be somewhat biased (ahem!) but that is exactly what "Admirals" was designed for. Some of the playtests have involved 20+ ships per player and have moved quite smoothly.

As another example of how it handles fleet actions, at the 2018 convention of the Seven Years War Association, I ran the Battle of the Virginia Capes; over fifty ships on a 6' x 8' table with four players, and completed the action in just a few hours. That game looked like this:

You might want to post on the TFL forum as well. Also have a look at the TFL specials on the website there are a number of issues with KMH articles although I don't recall seeing one on the A-D wars.

There is a modification called "To Covet Glory" which covers small ships, so something for large 17th century battles could be done.

I have played Rod Langton's 17th century fleet battle rules: "Tiller & Whipstaff" and they work well for large fleets.

Two others: "War at Sail" (wargame vault) covers the period as does the new "Oak&Iron" rules. O&I is more small actions in the Caribbean but they have ships of the line. Both have video coverage on You Tube.
