I agree with those.

Lee's retreat from Gettysburg was masterly.

"The race to the Dan" with Cornwallis chasing Greene was a retreat, I guess.

And Houston retreating across Texas after the Alamo fell, until he turned to fight at San Jacinto.

Napoleon in 1814, the 7 days of Glory. He still lost but it was a pretty great exit.

Otherwise I would say the Russian retreat in 1812 and in 1941-42 are some of the best. and they won their campaigns.

The Czech Legion should be in there.

I mean, retreating east to the Pacific Ocean to take ships back to Europe to get to a newly-formed Czechoslovakia? It's a retreat AWAY from the destination!

The quote, "Retreat? Hell, we're just attacking in another direction!" may be truer about the Czech Legion than Chosin. They literally attacked previously uninvolved groups and territory, they weren't falling back on a former route of advance, and they weren't falling back toward friendly lines!

Who was it that made that statement, "Retreat? Hell, we're just attacking in another direction."?
