I have avoided 40K this long (not because I don't like the concept, but because I fear the long deep slippery slope into the potential money pit!). I was thinking of picking up a copy of Space Hulk (4th Ed). Dare I? (40k is very big around here, so is Warhammer (fantasy battles) still and Age of Sigmar and all GW games – so if I went beyond the boxed game there's lots!) |

First its a great game and Just control yourself, If you like the universe try Kilteam or Necromunda. |

Already one box set has become three … ;) I do like the universe. I've read novels, I've bought some Space Marines, have an older rules manual, video game, pc games. I was thinking it would be good to play with the kids. |

I must warn you, it's addictive. I have all 4 editions (less some of the older supplements), and built 3-D terrain for all of them (15mm and 28mm.) And it's useful for more than 40K… ;-) |

I played in an Epic game once, and it was fun, but I never fell in love with the system or the universe. The miniatures are cool, though, and often available for free or cheap, so I use some in Traveller. |

Traveller is an amazing concept! I just wish that was expanded upon. I can see some epic rpgs (computer based) set in the Traveller universe. How different are the rules from 40k tabletop? Would Spacehulk be an introduction without too much difference from the regular rules (but obviously simplified)? |

40K is different. Space Hulk is not a good intro to the rules, but is a good intro to miniature mechanics and a darn fun game. |

Yeah, fun self contained game – rules are old school but clean and simple. Probably haven't played since first or second edition, so can't comment specifically on 4th ed. Yes addictive, but not so much a gateway drug to 40K generally – and yes not related to 40K rules. It certainly got played to death at the time of its release – pretty much every GW shop I went in had its own 3D terrain boards. I bought copy relatively cheap from the Works IIRC when they went for a mass market release that obviously didn't quite work. Must dig it out. Also if you don't like the 40K aesthetic you could easily buy some not-colonial marines and Geiger'esque aliens. |

Is 4th edition the same as the 3rd (which I have), but with extra missions? |
joedog | 11 Apr 2020 9:44 a.m. PST |
iirc 4th edition had one or two additions from 3rd. Any of the editions are a lot of fun. |

'Space Hulk' is a good stand-alone board game, but if you're simply looking for a boredom buster "board game lite" to play with the kids while staying at home, you might also take a look at 'Space Marine Adventures: Labyrinth of the Necrons':

Never cared for GW games, but have loved Space Hulk since the first edition. Buy a copy. It is a bargain for what you get. And it really is a great game. Besides, how many games do you own that have an hour glass as a key game mechanic. |

I've never heard of Space Marine Adventures. Looks kind of neat! Yes, it does seem like a good deal. Looking through GW stuff I'd like to get Blitz Bowl (simplified Blood Bowl for 8+) as well. No stores stock it, though, near me and being in Canada there are no Barnes and Noble shops. Although that's probably for a different thread. |

I've been playing 40k since 1987. I played SH 1st Ed, 2nd Ed and still play 4th from time to time. SH still remains my favorite game of all GWs productions. Imo it's worth the cost. Once you've played all the basic scenarios twice, try using regular Space Marines instead of Terminators for a challenge. |

I took a look on ebay, damn those are some price hikes. Looks like the price for Space Hulk has doubled at least since I last looked pre-lock down. |

I have two copies at home. 1 3rd and 1 4th edition. I'll check when I get home but if the 4th edition is complete wit all parts on the sprue then I could let that game for for $150 USD plus shipping (which will likely be costly). As most of you know, that's $100 USD-$150 cheaper that Ebay and much cheaper than on Amazon.
If you might be interested in 4th Ed please let me know at: Kenshin68@roadrunner.com Cheers. Danny |
