I bought a paint set from AK, that has colour for leather and metal buckles.
You have to mix them yourself to get the desired effect.
The box comes with pictures of examples, that look very realistic.
However I can't get that leather look. You know the slightly "smooth" shiny look of leather. No matter the combo of colours I use, it becomes a very mat colour.

Probably nothing that you're doing wrong but more down to the paint chemistry. I suspect a satin varnish would achieve the leather finish that you describe.

Yea, I agree on the satin finish overall, with just perhaps a light dusting of dust, here and there, for "realism".

Thanks, satin varnish helped, still not quite what I'm aiming for. But it helps.

Do you want it shinier?

Is it black leather? Brown? Dress parade stuff?

A lot of the models painted are large scale ones used for photos. 120mm.

Heck, a lot of the major companies use painted 3-ups for their images.

(I remember seeing the painted HO scale Atlantic boxes wondering how they got all that detail only to find out years later the photos were of 54mm sized figures – at least it inspired me to try …). Now they have Photoshop…
