"The first Confederate battle flag captured in the Gettysburg campaign was lost by Jeb Stuart's Cavalry – the 13th Virginia Cavalry. It would be the only Confederate Cavalry standard lost in Pennsylvania.

After Pickett's-charge, 38 flags were captured. The total number of battle flags that crossed the wall was eleven. At least nine taken in the Angle – those of the 1st, 3rd, 9th, 14th, 28th, 53rd, 56th, and 57th Virginia regiments and an unidentified flag. There were two more unidentified, captured crossing the wall south of the copse of trees. Eight flags reached the wall but did not cross. The 7th, 11th and 19th Virginia, 26th North Carolina, 1st and 7th Tennessee, 13th Alabama and 11th Mississippi.

The total number of Confederate flags captured in the Gettysburg campaign is probably 60."

Hmm. Interesting, but ending with "probably 60" doesn't that makes it an estimate, not a fact? Still very interesting. Thanks for the post. 🙂

Based upon where many of these flags are said to have been captured/recovered, some brave Confederates fought that day.

Normally having a standard captured was a mark of shame for a regiment. But for those regiments who were in Pickett's Charge, having their standard captured was a badge of honor- it meant they got close enough to the Union lines to have it captured.
