"On March 2, 1956, Morocco achieved independence from the two European powers that until then governed the designs of the Alawite country, Spain and France. France withdrew completely from the country on April 7, Spain handed over the territories of the Rif and Yebala, located on the Mediterranean coast, between Ceuta and Melilla. But Spain continued to hold sovereignty over the squares of Ceuta, Melilla and the so-called Spanish West Africa (AOE). The latter included the territories of Sahara, Ifni, Rio Muni and the island of Fernando Poo…."
