Who offers the most opaque yellow and white paints? I have tried several and always seem to need multiple coats which I dont like to do. I was pretty happy with the Cel-Vinyl line but found they are OOP when I looked to replace the bottles I had. Prefer craft paints but anything will do. |

Vallejo ivory is a classic for good coverage. Haven't found a yellow that covers well. Have to start with a white or white-ish background John |

I've found that Folk Art yellow ochre tends to cover well with one coat. Jim |

I have had great success with this yellow. I have been using it for lace or piping on ACW Union cavalry shell jackets. One coat over the dark blue has worked fine. Holbein Acryla Gouache Artists Acrylic Polymer Emulsion, 20ml Lemon Yellow (D034) link For this application, another advantage of this yellow is that it is a lemon yellow which was used by the U.S. Cavalry at least through the 1874 blouse. It had a problem with fading to white eventually in the sun. That led to a yellow with a bit of an orange cast to it like is seen in most Hollywood movies. But if you want less of a lemon shade, they may have one in the range. It is expensive if you are painting a regiment of Skinner's Horse, but for trim you use very little. Although you did not ask about red, their pure red covers dark blue in one coat too. Again, I have used it only as a trim color. Here it is. Foundry 'Lemon' covers pretty well. I normally put a mid-brown or ochre base layer first anyway. |

I was pleasantly surprised by GW base coat white, very thick in the container and with excellent opaqueness. Haven't tried a yellow, though. |

The problem is that acrylics are very transparent when thinned, but yellows and whites are very opaque pigments. The result is splotchyness when spread over wide areas. Blues and reds are very transparent pigments, and so don't have this problem. The easiest fix is to use darker, more transparent paints as a base and then building up to yellow and white highlights in thin layers. This also creates nice gradients and shadows without the need of a wash. It is multiple coats, but I find it takes about as long as base coating and waiting for washes to dry. I think it's also more fun to do and looks better in the end. |

Gesso is the most opaque white. |

I've found that Delta Ceramcoat 'Straw' #02078 to be a useful 'light dull yellow' with good 'covering power'. You may find it useful as a base coat for brighter colors. |

Thanks for the tips. I am not looking to put multiple coats of color on my figures and ships. I paint sort of toy soldier style and want to just get it done. No golden brush awards for my stuff. |

That may not be possible but it depends on what primer or undercoat colour and type you are using. If it's white then you could probably just use a white or yellow enamel and get coverage with one coat but make sure the primer is compatible with enamel paint. If you have to stick to acrylic paint then if you use white primer/undercoat you may well need to use more than one coat of white or yellow to get adequate coverage. If you prime in black then I think you'll be lucky to get any paint to cover it in one go. As always in painting it's far better to apply two thin coats than one thick one. They dry faster and possibly harder and preserve the detail better. |

I've found Vallejo Heavy Goldbrown very useful for yellows. It covers black primer in one coat, and then you can easily highlight upwards with purer and brighter yellows. |

Ceramcoat Butter Yellow is pretty good, but the quality varies from bottle to bottle. |
