it was not a movie but a poor TV serie with historical inaccuracies, as being only a TV serie, is suffering a lack of material and financial means in comparison with a movie the main actor as Toussaint was bad while others minor and secondary roles and some of them not even professionnals actors like Sonia Rolland Miss France 2000 and Magloire were much better than him totally disappointing |

Well regardless, as we all know from poorly conceived 'modern' historical films, such usually convey the essence of issues involved at the time of history. I drove via Jura to Neufchatel and the little fort he was jailed in is impressive in the mountains. I took some short amount of time to examine the exterior but failed to take enough photos, tho it is forever etched in my mind. I have d/l to enjoy later … Davew |

A successful film on form but whose background reveals certain historical shortcomings. Philippe Pichot, development project manager of the Château de Joux-Toussaint Louverture and member of the committee for the memory and history of slavery, expressed his disappointment with Philippe Niang's film. "Technically successful and despite excellent actors, the scenario comes down, from a historical point of view, to a caravan of worn-out clichés, rough manipulations, pure and simple inventions, blatant historical errors and anachronisms in rare moments of historicity and intellectual honesty. And the controversy swells. Alain Foix, however screenwriter of the TV movie, agrees. Without questioning the production, whose tenacity he praised, Alain Foix was sidelined by the director. "We had managed to agree on a kind of compromise between form and content. But the final version sent by Philippe Niang was quite different, therefore, I had no further news … "says Alain Foix. And because "the power of television imprints imaginations and (that) what remains of a false story becomes true", the scriptwriter confirms the errors pointed out by Philippe Pichot. for Marcel Dorigny, historian, maître de conférences at University of Paris VIII the viewers will keep in mind the most striking images, which are also the most false! The tragic opening scene, in which Toussaint Louverture is seen witnessing his father's drowning, never existed, as General Caffarelli killing Mars Pleasure of a bullet in the back. I think the descendants of Caffarelli are furious! Thus, Toussaint Louverture and his family were not separated in metropolitan France as shown in the first scene of the film, but in Saint Domingue; Toussaint Louverture's father did not die thrown into the sea in 1751 but almost centenarian in 1804; Mars Plaisir was not executed by General Caffarelli who never met him but died 20 years later in Paris, and General Laveaux, who in the film witnessed the forced departure of Toussaint Louverture to the metropolis, had left the island long before …The list is long…

I forgot to mention I have the only? English biography on Toussaint, hence my interest in visiting Château de Joux personally (even if conveniently en-route). I accept all you say- movies and tv are all ridiculously (particularly hollyweird) accentuating myths, falsehoods and stereotypes in the name of making dollars. I find it embarrassing to see 'ethnic' groups doing it to themselves and believing they have 'taken back the power'! Just foolish. Well the greed is about to burn. I accept your list of errors and omissions and the reticence of the producers to endorse it further. One can lay the same blame on many historical artifacts, War and Peace being written well, but for an audience presubscribed to devour it. Thanks lilian, regards d |

Good to see films about the Haitian Revolution. An often overlooked Napoleonic campaign that's fascinating. |
