Howden's recent excellent Hue 68 book suggested that the prize winning photography by Olson of the wounded Marine on the tank showed a casualty who, against the odds, survived. So iconic an image, but subsequent research suggests too good to be true. The Corpsman was convinced he did not, despite many folk later thanking him for saving their lives as being the wounded man. Earlier photo by Don McCullin, but this site shows a whole sequence leading up to the evacuation. Never published, but very convincing text. Wish it was not true……….

and he may be right. That is always the first thing that comes up on any search. Even the later NY Times article admits to doubt, but this poor chap looked out of it long before he got to the tank. It would take more than a bottle of plasma I fear. Grantham or Blaine, who knows now? Frankly he does not look very much like either of them, from the contemporary photos of the two. I guess he remains the Unknown Soldier of VN..? Bless him whoever. |

He didn't, that I am afraid seems the general agreement. Blaine was originally identified as the victim. Later the story of Grantham emerged (he did get home after a massive chest wound) and Mark Bowden was convinced he was the Marine on the tank. Re-examining the portrait photos, this poor lad does actually look like Blaine and not Grantham. The McCullin sequence of photos is very convincing if you follow the link below the two photos above. Of course, none of this may matter. The photo did much to bring home to the US just what a sacrifice its young men were making in VN….or it should have done anyway |
