"The design of many tanks made very significant changes after the start of their use in combat. Practice often refutes theory, especially during World War II, where military equipment quickly became obsolete. The IS-2 heavy tank was no exception. It was created with a sufficient reserve level to protect against German heavy tank shells Pz.Kpfw.Tiger Ausf.E. But it turned out that there were more dangerous opponents on the battlefield, whose existing armor could not protect from fire. As a result, in the late summer of 1944, production of the upgraded IS-2 began in Chelyabinsk. Sometimes it is called IS-2M, sometimes IS-2 mod.1944. However, both names were not used in reality."
