A friend of mine has asked me to put together some Goths.

Money is always an issue for everyone, in real-life, so I suggested the Old Glory Goths to start and then supplementing from other makers as need may be ( initial investment often being the most costly ) .

Old Glory makes Lombards and Franks. I have seen the Lombards can be used ( link ) as Goths. What about the Old Glory Franks?

Any other suggestions?

( He prefers metals, as opposed to the Gripping Beast plastics. )

Here are my Old Glory Franks:

The Franks might be better for earlier period Goths, by the looks of them.

I think he was hoping for a Late Roman period army.

I approve of the unpainted shields, I've always felt that we over do the painted shields on the lowly warriors…

There's too many choices to list them all, I think, but I try to scour the web for deals. I would use Late Roman aux types, some Early Saxons, Early Germans (with pants), Franks and any number of dark age figs without chainmail.

I know there are a lot (a lot more than I thought there would be).

A question about the Old Glory Franks – how tall are they to the eyes?

I have some Old Glory that are clearly 25mm and some that are 28mm.

I know the company lists them as "25's" but there is a great variance.

Here is another view of my Franks fighting an out of period opponent ADLG battle:

Old Glory's Arthurian range has figures that can be used for most post roman successor kingdoms.

I did find a picture of some painted Old Glory Lombard cavalry online:

I've been toying (deliberate pun) with the idea of creating a Goth army, and in the process had a look at the OG figures. I was disappointed to find that the infantry are anatomically more dwarfish than other OG ranges (I think this range was one of the early ones), and the poses are drearily static. They also almost all wear unconvincing helmets, and the pack includes numbers of those weird coffin-lid shields that have been widely discredited (OG's Germanic cavalry are, however, good, and for Goths you can mix in others such as the Lombards shown above).

In contrast, as demonstrated by the above photos, the OG Franks are nicely sculpted, dynamically posed and better proportioned, but… they are very closely based on the images in the WRG book, down to the hairstyles and costume, and therefore distinctively Frankish (or Alamannic – if you avoid the stripes).

Anyway, I'm not short of ancient/DA German tribal paintbrush fodder: I have the OG Arthurian Saxons and Britons, and plenty of GB plastics, so I'll probably end up cobbling a Goth army together mostly from those, with head swaps where required.
