I'm working on painting the forces for both sides during the Java Sea campaign '41/42 and am curious what the consensus is on the right color for Dutch destroyers. Some pictures they look fairly dark, close to the British 507B others seem to show a light gray with a couple of disruptive dark spots. Does anyone have a good color illustration that can get me at least close to the right tone? Also what sources do people have for De Ruyter's final paint scheme? I see some people on modelshipgallery.com modeled her with a two-tone light/dark gray and others have gone with a green/light gray/dark gray. I'm curious about what you all have gone with and why. |

link about halfway down is a picture of De Ruyter in Jan/Feb of 1942 showing she had the camo paint scheme. |

I've seen that picture but it's a little unclear to me which of the combinations it is what with the photo being black and white and all. |

I did all my Dutch ships with light gray-green and a darker gray after considering the possibilities. |

Java
Java at sea, as seen from the Australian heavy cruiser HMAS Canberra. The photo was very likely taken between January 18 and 20, 1942, when both Java and Canberra were escorting Singapore-bound convoy MS-2. The photo was taken by Able Seaman Bernard W. Simmonds, RAN from the heavy cruiser HMAS Canberra. (Able Seaman Bernard W. Simmonds Collection, HMAS Canberra Museum, via Peter Cannon/Andrew Fock) Tromp link link I think this is January 1942. Notice that her aft superstructure has been cut back to give C turret a greater arc and that her twin bofors are now on the centre line with the more forward one raised to fire over the aft one. There is no wargame model that shows this. I have a Netherlands picture book of her that has a December 1941 photo showing this but it doesn't give the date it was done. Evertsen
