The shift back to bigger ships is interesting especially for coastal navies like Israel (or Finland). Every navy is ramping up the size of their destroyers and frigates. The new Israelis ships are light frigates and nearly double the standard load of the Sa'ar 5 which were again double the size of the Sa'ar 4. Israel did used to operate destroyers and light frigates but all of them were phased out by the 1970s and replaced with lighter missile craft. I understand larger ships for long range deployments and ocean duties but one does wonder how viable they are in small enclosed seas especially given the fact that large supersonic anti-ship missiles are being sold around the world.
Indeed let's not forget the sinking of the Z-class destroyer INS Eliat back in 1967 by anti-shipping missiles. |
