I've seen the Don Troiani painting, my question is did only the officers have red pants or did the troops also? |

My reference (Osprey book on State Troops) says the 55th New York wore dark blue trousers – it also says that the officers had dark blue trousers with a red welt, but when it comes to ACW officers pretty much anything is fair game |

The Troiani print has the officer in a light blue frock coat with red pants and a trooper in a light blue frock coat with tan pants. I have found old toy soldiers of the 55th, one company has them all in red pants and the other in red and tan like the Troiani print. Maybe I'll do a mix on the pants. |

Frederick Todd, American Military Equipage 1851-1872, Vol. II, (1983) p. 1040, lists the following for the 55th NY: 1857-1859: Left Wing (6 French comps) wore French type inf uniform: gray-blue overcoat, lined and trimmed with red; full red pants; red forage cap with blue band; red epaulets. Had pioneers with bearskin hat and white leather apron. Right Wing (4 American comps, transferred out in 1858-1859) adopted state M1858 dress in 1858. 1861: added zouave comp: dark blue trimmed with red; full red zouave trousers; light blue sash, red fez, yellow leather leg cuffs and white canvas gaiters. Enfield rifle. Heavy duck pants substituted for red trousers; white gaiters. 1863: issued blue fatigue blouse. c1866: blue frock coat, red pants, dress cap; details unknown. I think the Troiani print depicts an officer still wearing the pre-war uniform of a French style overcoat with red trousers and cap. The soldier is also wearing the French overcoat and red cap but has tan coloured "duck" trousers. |
