My father was on Occupation duty in Germany after the war from 1945-46. He was stationed in Regensburg. He never mentioned that there was any trouble while he was stationed there and it was generally pleasant duty. He had many German POWs working for him including an artist who painted a magnificent scene of Regensburg centered on the Cathedral. It hangs in my living room to this day. He had many interesting stories. He was appointed escort to Mickey Rooney, the actor when he was in Germany on USO tour. They went to many a beer hall together and had adventures together. My comment to him when he told me the story was an incredulous "You partied with Mickey Rooney?". I never looked at my father the same way again. :-) |
