Now this I have been looking forward to. A very imaginative range to release, the MPs involved in the siege of the US Embassy in Saigon. Sounds ideal for a small unit "skirmish" game, which, if it had turned out differently, might have made quite a difference. The helmet markings struck me as a challenge, but would be great if well done. Certainly look good here. As usual from Gringos40, the work of Andy Singleton

Incredible! Both the sculpts, the diorama and the paint job. Talk about realism! I don't think I have ever seen more detailed figures. |

They have produced others for the Embassy Attack, all with the MP brassard and, Ged tells me, detailed differences in the flak jackets and uniforms when compared with Marines. link |

They look real nice! The MP's were kept to a higher standard, regards their uniforms. Most of us just threw on some pants and shirt, whereas the MP's were supposed to look sharp. Different commander's prerogatives I guess. There were also AFP's (Armed Forces Police). A patrolling jeep would have a representative (cop) from the Army, Navy and Air Force (Navy covered the Marines) and a Vietnamese rep. Also, as an aside, there were Navy personnel who would drive 'taxis' (usually large pick-up trucks) for troops on large bases, mostly to get drunk GI's safely "home". |

MP freehand must be quite something to do. QC I would not even like to think about. I have been agonising over how to do the 716, the badge, the red and white stripe…it cries out for a decal/transfer! I have not yet ordered my MPs, but will shortly…. |

Bismark thanks for the great comments..the paintjob really sets the figures up wonderfully..really pleased with this commission! Liam…the MP lettering and insignia took some serious work and dedication..will save a set of MPs for you! regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com |

and more "eye candy" to cheer us on a lockdown day;
Great attention to detail in the modelling. I have not yet seen them "in the flesh" (lead mountain is shrinking though) but I get the impression these are not just recycled Marine figures. the arm brassard must be a Godsend in painting. The helmet. Not only is it correctly shown without the Mitchell cover, but it seems smaller in every case than the Hue Marines' look. That I think is because it is the helmet liner that is painted like this, with a gloss finish. I will bet there are other details I am missing too….. As for doing MP on the front…….steady hand needed there |
jammy four | 02 Apr 2020 3:49 a.m. PST |
thanks Liam glad you like the MP… all our MPS are New sculpts…they are very different from the other branches gloss helmet..flak jacket,,,knife ..though they varied their equipment with Truncheons the attack on the Embassy was very serious so full combat gear issued . regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com |

Another view. I do now notice their flak jacket is indeed a different style to the Marines'. The lacing ties at the side for example.

Yes, the USMC "flak vest" was not the same type as the US Army. It was heavier and provided more protection, IIRC … |
deadhead | 16 Apr 2020 12:37 p.m. PST |
What, you mean the marines got the better kit? Naw, that never happened surely. They always got the obsolete rubbish, but seemed to make great use of it. One of the two was better. Tell us more folks! |
Legion 4 | 16 Apr 2020 2:43 p.m. PST |
From the internet, and AFAIK it's accurate based on my experience and study … We were issued the leftover "flak vests" from Vietman in the 101, '80-'83 and the 2ID, '84-'85. They could get hot and heavy rather quickly …
M-1952 Fragmentation Protective Body Armor The M-1952 Body Armor was developed during the Korean War by the U.S. Army and continued in use through the Vietnam War years. This was the flak vest most frequently issued to Army personnel during the Vietnam War… The M-1955 USMC Armored Vest The USMC M-1951 was upgraded and became the USMC M-1955, used by the Marine Corps in Vietnam. Like the Army vests used in Vietnam, the M-1951 "Marine Vest" was developed during the Korean War … The M-1955 vest was very similar to the M-1951 but had a rope ridge fitted to the right shoulder so as to retain a slung rifle while on the march. The vest itself was made from nylon and had 23 separate 5 1/4in square, by 1/8in thick Doron inserts. These inserts overlapped (internally) in pockets below the shoulder area, these overlapping pockets were formed by 13 layers of nylon as ballistic filler. This vest (like the Army M69) had a ¾ length collar constructed from 6 piles of ballistic nylon. In the medium size the vest weighed 10lb3oz and each one cost $47.00 USD. The U.S. Army's vests (Body Armor, Fragmentation Protective, Vest M69) weighed under eight pounds and were made of several layers of ballistic nylon. The vests used by the U.S. Marines weighed more than ten pounds and were a combination of ballistic nylon layers and fiberglass plates known as Doron and was made of fiberglass fibers placed in an ethyl cellulose resin under high pressure. It was, in my experience, too hot for the jungle environment. |

We are partial to a good-sized game. We're not purists (we just like to fight) so the same US company will ride into battle on foot or in her M113s or choppers as per scenario. She'll have just enough figures to have dismounts for her ACAV when pushing toward a company inserted by chopper. |
