I just picked up the starter set for Oak and Iron at Cold Wars and am wondering about colors- techniques for painting the ships. Did navies adhere to any standards at this point (@1650-1730)? Thanks for any advice. |

Only thing that would be considered standard would be pennants and there could still be variation. I've seen greens, whites, blues, yellows, reds and other colors for painted areas. Osprey have some nice artwork in their pirate and galleon booklets. |

There's a painting guide on the Oak and Iron facebook page, they're working on making it pretty with proper formatting and pretty pictures, right now it is just a text Word doc. If you are not on facebook, email me at bigoeduke at hotmail dot com and I'll email it to you. It is a free document. |

Right now I am working on some ships in this game. link There is some information on the internet about how these ships were painted. I can tell you that there was no very strict criteria when painting them. |

Ditto the facebook page. A lot if different styles and methods posted. Pick the one you like. A great painting guide for this period is the Langton guide for the Anglo-Dutch wars. I believe it I is now offered for free on his website. He used to charge for it. PDF link |

What about painting style? Some of the ships in the rule book were painted using contrast paints. Curious about whether to prime and paint or just paint and wash, etc. Or spend loads of cash on contrast primer and paints – lol! |
