"No surprise: with great heat, I'm instinctively drawn to the water, and preferably the sea. Fueled by this seemingly ever-present longing these days, I decided to explore the rich sub-genre of Navy movies.

Throughout history, sea power has shaped the power of nations in wartime and in peace, with the Royal Navy's critical role in building the British Empire an obvious example.

Over the years, a slew of outstanding Navy-themed films have furnished us with a variety of salty celluloid adventures worth catching. The following dozen titles comprise my own personal favorites:…"

Good choices although there were several that I have not seen.

In harms way should have made the list for the surface action at the end.

William Warner13 Mar 2020 3:36 p.m. PST

I would add "Tora, Tora, Tora" to the list.

Hands down, "Mister Roberts" is my favourite.

The Bedford Incident.

I would add "Tora, Tora, Tora" to the list.

Yep, Tora, Tora, Tora is an excellent movie depiction of the Pearl Harbor attack. It was filmed in two units, a US-based film unit and a Japan-based unit led by big hitters that included Akira Kurosawa and Toshio Masuda. They were incredibly devoted to detail, as much as budget would allow. They built *full scale* mock-ups the battleship Nagato and the carrier Akagi. They also had the full cooperation of the US Navy and were able to film carrier launches off of the USS Yorktown. It does a masterful job of weaving in both Japanese and US views and experiences of Pearl Harbor.

And don't forget Storm Over the Pacific!!

The new movie "The Greyhound" from "The Good Shepherd" written by C. S. Forester (a truly most excellent read) will surely soon be near the top of that list if it follows the book at all.

The trailer in case you've not had the pleasure;

Damn the Defiant is a good film, fairly technically accurate for an older film if I recall. I also enjoyed Gregory Peck in the Hornblower film.
I must also applaud Master & Commander for the casting. As a film I thought they could have picked a much better Aubrey/Maturin story but I thought the casting was excellent. I'd read all of the books by then but thought the characters (even down to the wonderful Killick) were just as I'd imagined them.
Cavcmdr – Shame on you for mentioning Carry on Jack :-) , and agreed that Das Boot is an omission.

The Last Detail doesn't belong on the list. It has sailors but no ships. Not arguing whether it's good or not, but if you go to the movies expecting to see water and ships you won't.

Ferozopore20 Mar 2020 11:04 a.m. PST

My three favorites: Sink the Bismarck for the Swordfish scenes.
In Which We Serve-made in 1942, it conveys the spirit of the Royal Navy.
Das Boot-Gawd, what a way to earn a living.

Bozkashi Jones28 Mar 2020 5:58 a.m. PST

Good list, but I would most definitely add:

1) The Cruel Sea
2) Yangtze Incident

The Yangtze incident has some amazingly atmospheric combat footage, all filmed on the Medway in southern England.

Oh, and agreed on Carry on Jack ;-)

One more thing – doesn't it always grate in Sink the Bismarck! that the Battle of Denmark Strait has the Germans firing to starboard and the RN firing to port?

Totally agree about The Last Detail.

If that's on the list you may as well have On The Town – the song and dance numbers are way better!

rhacelt01 Apr 2020 7:27 a.m. PST

Sink the Bismark is one of my favorites. Where is Midway? The original not the new one.

Like to ones already been mentioned but how about
Mutiny on the Bounty (well if carry on Jack can be nomimated!)
