…The group of neighbors recently gathered for the coronavirus-themed fête, complete with face masks, "Quarantini" cocktails, Corona beers and the board game Pandemic…. link |

Alexandra emphasized that the party was not intended to offend and that the group was simply interested in "having a good time". That offends me. Glad they had a good time. |

Good grief. Someone send these guys the SparkNotes for "The Masque of the Red Death". |

Look how young they are. Their generation sums it all up. "It's all about me, I want it now, it won't happen to me, and I'm depressed" |

Looks like one of those fetish parties. On a lighter note, I am glad to see that they had some Corona beer. A few days ago there was an article in the UK press stating that 38% of US citizens would not buy Corona beer because of fear of the virus. I have some in the fridge and fully intend to drink some when gaming tonight. |

Disgusting. People are dying and they make fun of it. |

7th Va Cavalry, Because selfish, angsty morons never existed before Their Generation? |

Yup, it's not like the baby boom generation is self centered or anything! |

It's all fun and games until someone dies from it. |

Instead of going to large gatherings with random people where you don't know their exposure network, you have small meetings with people you know, you are familiar with their exposure network, and you have had close contact in the last two weeks so you are already in their exposure network … isn't that what you are supposed to do? Also, Pandemic is a great game. |

Dynaman 8789, couldn't the same charge be levelled at many light-hearted toy soldier wargames from HG Wells's Little Wars to the present – "People died and they make fun of it"? I'm not saying you don't have a point, but where does that leave wargaming? |
Slow Oats | 13 Mar 2020 8:26 a.m. PST |
I agree with etotheipi, it seems pretty much harmless. Frankly I don't know why there's even an article about it. |

I have yet to win a game of Pandemic. Just shows how realistic it is…. Our current sport at work is coming up with snappy lyrics for the 20 seconds handwash thing. |

Lighten up AND have a little fun. You only live once, or so I've been told, so might as well enjoy it, instead of hiding in your home or a cave, waiting for the grim reaper to knock on the door. How exactly does one "win" at the game of Pandemic? |

How exactly does one "win" at the game of Pandemic? Pandemic is a collaborative game, where players take on different roles to battle several diseases that are spreading across the globe by a fixed set of rules that are seeded with a pseudo-random event set that implements a history function. You either all win by curing all the diseases before they reach certain critical conditions, or you all lose. The basic game is hard, and there are variants that let you make it harder. |

I have the Cthulhu version of Pandemic and it seems a little easier (emphasis on "little"). And go figure, the theme is now LESS offputting than the original. Well, except to Cthulhu cultists, I guess. |

I wonder about doing a virtual Pandemic party. Everyone stays home, and calls in with one of those video meeting things, like Google Hangouts. One camera points at the board. Maybe we number the cards in advance, so that everyone can look at their own sets of the cards that are drawn and are in everyone's hands. |

We are planning on exploring Microsoft Team as a possible tool for playing RPG's on our normal game night if travel is a problem. Could come in handy if we get snowed in or want to play during the week as some members have an hour drive. |

Maybe we number the cards in advance, so that everyone can look at their own sets of the cards that are drawn and are in everyone's hands. Since it is a collaborative game, we just lay the cards out in front of us so everyone can see. |

In fairness to them, and 12 March seems like a very long time ago now, the pandemic then didn't seem as much of a threat and the incompetence of certain governments had yet to be realised. I doubt they'd be quite so blasé now. Pandemic is a superb game, though – one of the 'new breed' of board games which has well-honed and interesting mechanics. As war gamers there's a lot for us to consider in modern board games. I play it with the kids, but at the moment things are a little too close to home, so we're playing Condottiere, Eldrich Horror and Undaunted Normandy. On the plus side, the time we DID play pandemic, we won :) Nick |
