I am considering painting up a Roman army using Victrix figures. Can anyone recommend any metal figures that I can feed in to add more variety.

Any that you could use without any worries in the same unit?
Any that are close enough but perhaps not on the same base?

Are there any different ranges that would work with Legions / Auxila / Cav

TIA

I can tell you what NOT to use.

Wargames Foundry and Warlord Games EIR. They are 25mm.

Warlord Auxiliaries are probably usable.

I'm surprised more haven't answered.

I would do internet searches for size comparisons with the Victrix Romans.

I would suspect Aventine Miniatures might work pretty good for command and archers. Their cavalry as well.

I would suspect Blacktree Design war machines and archers would be a good mix BUT they are very behind in their orders.

If/when Simon Miller sees this thread he will be able to give some well informed advice.

(I have a lot of Victrix, but not their EIR, I have a lot of Blacktree and Warlord and Foundry EIR, but no Aventine. )

Here is a visual between the Victrix and Warlord:

Actually Foundry's Steve Saleh castings match up well with Victrix. I am not sure about their cavalry from previous posts they looked heroic scale?

Wow. That's a significant difference in size.

LOL I don't have any of the Victrix range. But I'd judge from the comparison photo on the left that they would work in terms of height with Wargames Foundry Saleh (not the smaller Foundry Perry) or Black Tree miniatures or Aventine. Foundry's cavalry would be too small, but Victrix and Aventine do nice cavarly.

I was wondering about mixing as the Victrix helmets really enclose the face whereas others do not.

I did do searches on size comparisons – lots of people saying what wont work. Was hoping someone had done it before so could tell me what they did that worked.

Would be willing for the unit to have a different style of helmet mixed in. More worried about the head being roughly the same size. Although to my mind the biggest issue is probably the size of equipment – especially the shield, as it will be really obvious even to a cursory glance.

Victrix sell their shields separately and often include multiple heads in their sets so you should be able to blend in another range so long as the size is roughly similar.

Ah excellent, something I hadn't thought of – thanks for that.

Another question for the hive mind. If as seems certain both Warlord and Foundry are too out of wack size wise, what would be the best range to source a bolt thrower and crew from?

Asteroid X14 Mar 2020 9:46 a.m. PST

Bolt thrower and crew would be on a separate base. So not ranked beside.

I would suggest Blacktree Design (but again delivery problems – I waited 10 MONTHS for my last order of EIR from them).

I have the Warlord bolt thrower and Steve Salah's Praetorians. I can take a picture and post it later tonight (probably tomorrow).

I guess I should ask if you just want more EIR, cheaper or? That would help determine what exactly you want/need.

Oh: what good sources for size comparisons did you find?

I'd also suggest Black Tree for EIR artillery- if you can find them!

Victrix are the only ones doing plastic EIR in 28mm, Warlord's are basically 25mm and actual 25mm at that.

You could blend in some chainmail Romans using Warlord's Caesarian plastics.

Some of the Foundry Romans have the same heft as Victrix, just a bit shorter. If you're okay with converting then you could cut the legs off and make the thighs longer or get suitable plastic legs from Agema who sell individual sprues of their Republican Romans.

That's the main difference I've seen in some of these sizes, the Victrix have longer thighs and there is a decent gap between the hem of the tunic and the knee whereas others have the tunic sitting right above the knee but have torsos and arms the same size as Victrix.

I don't have any Victrix Romans but I have their Celts which I'm assuming are the same size. Oddly one of the Foundry Packs I have which is a Mounted Centurion with three engineers, two of the engineers match up well in size. Oddly because most of the characters in these sets are more in the heroic 25 category than 28. The ones actively working are a good size, they could also be converted to be artillery crew.

Probably a bit expensive for two guys though and you'd still want to lengthen the legs as mentioned earlier.

When I saw the Warlord EIR a few years back I was surprised how small they were. True 25mm and scaled more to 1980s than 2015+. With that said, they look fine fighting up against larger figures. I never really notice the difference in scaling on the table top even in the same armies. In the same unit no. So I would be happy to use the Warlord bolt throwers in a Victrix army.
