"A pair of boots worn by Napoleon during his final exile in St. Helena are to go under the hammer in Paris later this month. The size 40 boots (roughly seven in British measure) were given to a sculptor working on an equestrian statue of Bonaparte by General Henri Gatien Bertrand, who had followed the French leader into exile on the far-flung South Atlantic island after his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, auctioneers said…"

As we all know, on 22 June 1815, Napoleon abdicated & lost his job as Emperor of the French. He was given the boot. |

Main text says that Napoleon was 169 cm (or 5 feet 2 inches). This is wrong. 169 cm euates to just under 5 feet 7 inches. The boots are too expensive for me, but they are the right size. I could wear the boots, but never fill them. |

They'd fit me, too! What about a Worldwide ?"syndicate" to raise the cash and then we each have them for a day? By the way, the French height of "five feet and two thumbs" was, as has often been clarified by now, not an equivalent to "five feet and two inches" in British. The French "foot"/"pied" was equivalent to about thirteen inches, not twelve. |

Hi Robert – I like the idea of a syndicate for the boots. Thanks for clearing up the height discrepancy. |

Isn't there a saying "you don't know a person unless you have been in there boots" or something like that? |
Robert le Diable | 10 Mar 2020 9:09 a.m. PST |
Isn't that, "walk a mile in their shoes"? Or, about one-and-a-half kilometres, I suppose. Thinking about syndicates and the like, I suspect that the incidence of unexplained deaths or disappearances among a section of the Wargamiing community might display a remarkable increase were these boots to be purchased. Second Thoughts! |

By the way, anyone ever find out what happened to the Russian Professor who was a noted re-enactor, often as N himself, but then was involved with the death of a female Student? |

Rumor has it that the anonymous winner hopes to recover DNA for cloning purposes.. Just sayin'… ;-) |

DNA already contaminated with Arsenic, malheureusement! I did come into possession of a fragment of Le Redingote Gris, got a DNA sample cloned at the local hospital and now have a little white Arab horse…. If anyone wants to get into formation for a syndicate, how about a small contribution and a catchy slogan? All I could think of was, "un sou pour les souliers", but surely there's better. The joke about filling boots is good. |
