"The Pentagon has been issuing near daily announcements of new strikes against the Islamic militants of al-Shabab in Somalia, seemingly without affecting the al-Qaeda affiliate's ability to destabilise the country, in what is looking like a new "endless war" for the United States. The Trump administration's plans to reduce its military presence in Africa while re-centering its efforts toward two key strategic competitors – China and Russia – are coming at the expense of French-led operations against jihadists in the Sahel region…" Main page link Also… link Amicalement Armand |

Let's send in Rangers and this time back them up with enough firepower so 'Black Hawk Down' won't repeat itself. |

Let's send in Rangers and this time back them up with enough firepower so 'Black Hawk Down' won't repeat itself. Or even better, don't send the Rangers in and leave the Somalis to deal with their own problems. Another half baked military intervention will achieve nothing – you Americans seem incapable of learning this lesson. The sum of international military involvement in Somalia should be to smack any piracy attempts with great application of violence so they learn attacking shipping is bad. Subcontract the job to the Russians and Chinese if westerners are too squeamish to do anything serious about piracy.

" – you Americans seem incapable of learning this lesson." We're actually a pretty diverse bunch with differing opinions from each other. Unfortunately there exist neocons in both political parties who seem to favor military interventions. |

Well … that is just another failed or failing state from the region that can't/will never be able to help themselves. But the rub is in many of these "places" in that region. They have a strong islamic terrorist/jihadi faction(s). That are more capable[and motivated] than the national armies and police forces. E.g. A'stan … We may be pulling out of many of these "unfixable from outside sources failed/failing states". But their war will continue … let them fight it out. And if it looks like these jihadis may become a threat to the West again. That is why we have Drones w/Hellfires, JDAMs, LGBs, etc., etc. And yes collateral damage may/will occur but only be limited to a certain point. |
