Yeah some of them popped over here too to do a bit of off the cuff land settlement.

Mercer, of Waterloo fame, being a General by 1850s has a barely inhabited village named for him, a few shops and a petrol lay-by now, plus a famous Dutch cheese shop!

It was where he improvised a gunboat assault; a 6pdr (possibly) placed in a special built iron 'tank' (think water tank size) on a river boat, as 'artillery' and ran up the Waikato River to enfilade a dug in Maori position.

The approach was too swampy (it still sinks to this day) for anything heavy thus the 'gunpits' had been unassailable until the canon forced their withdrawl.
