… In Afghanistan. All American Troops Will Leave Within 14 Months. "The United States and the Taliban have signed a peace agreement aimed at ending the 18-year war in Afghanistan, America's longest. The signing could help President Donald Trump fulfill a key campaign promise to extract America from its 'endless wars.' The deal was signed on Saturday in the Qatari capital Doha by U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban political chief Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was on hand to witness the ceremony…" Main page link The Soviet Union signed a similar agreement with the Mujaheddin over 30 years ago. The Mujaheddin broke it within a year…. Can we expect the same to happen with this agreement?. But this time not sure if The Taliban have the means to conquer the country as the Mujaheddin did 30 years ago…. Afghanistan is a different country now, and many in the country do not like the Taliban….so…. Amicalement Armand

Peace agreements are meant to be broken. They're just a way for the US to pull out of quagmires with a modicum of honor intact (Paris Peace Accords anyone?). Whatever happens next is out of our hands. The US can't play world policeman forever, sorry. |

"world policeman"? The US are in Afghanistan for particularly national reasons that are entirely understandable. They are not there as a 3rd party enforcing some kind or "World" laws. |

I wonder how unified the Taliban are in favor of this deal. Are they organized in a top down structure with a strong central leader or are they more of a confederation of often rival warlords. If the later, than I'm afraid that it would just take one disgruntled warlord to wreck the peace for all. |

They are not there as a 3rd party enforcing some kind or "World" laws. "World police" has a much broader meaning in the context of America's role in the international world order than just peace keeping or enforcing international law. The US has been the leading guardian of the western liberal democratic world order since the end of WWII. This requires the maintenance of not only our democratic institutions and way of life but also trade routes and commerce. The US went into Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks on American democracy to defeat the terrorists (i.e. AQ) and to keep AQ from regaining strength. It also required setting up and propping up a friendly government in Kabul. The war expanded to fighting the Taliban because they were a threat to the regime in Kabul. I would say this definitely falls under the broad definition of "world police." |

This requires the maintenance of not only our democratic institutions and way of life but also trade routes and commerce. And that maintenance requires a heck of a lot of tax payer money. Not making a political statement, just the fact that the US spends more on defense than the next ten countries combined. |

Hopefully soon the US and its allies with stop wasting blood and treasure in this hellhole. Islamist terrorism can be contained by better immigration controls and policing. It can be destroyed but that would require the west changing its attitude to key centres of finance, support and influence – Riyadh, Islamabad, Doha, Abu Dhabi etc and these days even Ankara. |

Didn't take them long… A deadly blast shattered a period of relative calm in Afghanistan on Monday and the Taliban ordered fighters to resume operations against Afghan forces just two days after signing a deal to usher in peace. link |
