I am making bases for 1813 forces. For the OG grenadiers, would it be out of place to have fusilier-grenadiers as skirmishers on the base?

Admittedly, I am not a big Napoleonic nut. When I based my 1809 French and Austrians. I used Old Glory 10mm and used French skirmishers and Austrian jagers and Grenzers as skirmishers. I think it would depend on the nation and who naturally provided skirmishers. But in 10mm it's hard to really discern these details.

Maybe my question was not worded well. On a brigade size base with Old Guard Grenadiers, would Old Guard Fusilier-grenadiers be out of place as skirmishing on the same base

Or would only the Grenadiers supply their own skirmishers

Preferably I would integrate all traits in the base.

I'd say go ahead for two reasons:

1) It's your army, do what you want

2) As the wars wore on, more and more skirmishers were used. At times entire battalions were deployed as skirmishers. So even if it didn't happen, it easily could have.

Hello burntincanada!

Although the OGG could perform almost any task they were the ultimate shock troops and rarely used as a front line unit. If they ever skirmished it would be awkward to call on another formation to supply them. They would do it for themselves. So I would not put any skirmishers on their base. It also makes them stand out even more from other lower class bases. However, if your using Baccus figures I think they make a OGG skirmish figure, so what else would you use them for? Also if the rules give any advantages for having skirmishers then I would certainly put them on.

Are you in Canada? I'm in Toronto.

Best regards,

Glenn

Hi Glenn
Yes, it's Keith in Chatham
In Blucher, the OGG get a skirmish bonus,so I like to model the skirmishers. Just wondering if in the brigade, they would have other troops as the skirmishers
I am using Adler figures

Hello Keith!

Long time no see, trust you have been good.

So yes by all means put some skirmishers on that base.

The common practice in most armies was that every battalion would supply it's own skirmishers. Since the OGG were over qualified to do just about anything they would certainly supply their own skirmishers. Other guard formations might not even be close to them so to coordinate anything like that would be highly unlikely. Now in the event of a large scale attack that included other formations it's certainly possible that another battalion or two would cover the entire frontage as a massive skirmish screen. However, in their normal role as shock troops they probably simply went forward in an attack formation that may or may not have used skirmishers.

In case your not aware you can also use Blucher bases to play Polemos Napoleonic Marechal d'Empire.

Sounds like your taking on a big project. I would like to read some AAR's and see some photos when your finished. You could have just sent me a message and asked me to put on a 1813 game for you and your friends. Oddly enough we actually did a few last year.

If you want to get back on my list send me your current email as I think my computer deleted the last one I had.

Best regards,

Glenn

Hi Glenn
I am putting a game on at Hotlead – will you be there this year?
My bases are 70x70 representing ~ a brigade. so usually three 12 figure groups, a gun and some skirmishers – maybe a couple of cavalry figs
Just need to finish up the Imperial Guard bases
email is kburnett(at)sympatico.ca

First hand French evidence suggests the OG did not use skirmishers in their final attack on the allied ridge at Waterloo. However, the two battalions of the 1st Regiment, that remained behind La Belle Alliance, threw skirmishers out towards Planchenoit.

Hello Keith!

I was not planning on going to Hotlead this year. I am, however, putting on two games on May 31 at Broadsword. So maybe I'll see you there. Your basing sounds like they will look fantastic. I would certainly enjoy gaming with you, but I'm not a fan of most Brigade based games. They are too abstract for my enjoyment. Thanks for the email, I'll get you back on the list, so at least you will know what I'm up to.

Best regards,

Glenn
