Two questions actually. If anyone can help please? Firstly what colour trousers did the Imperial Guard Zouaves wear? I have gone for red, but I've come across paintings of them wearing white, such as in Osprey's Solferino book. I thought the Turcos wore white and the Zouaves red, or doesn't it matter? Secondly, did the Imperial Guard grenadiers still have the red patch with the white grenade on top of their busby? |

Most probably go with the white. Red trousers were popular with the French after a degree of Napoleon the 3rd, when French scientists synthesized a red dye. So, Napoleon ordered the red fabrics to support French chemical industry. I do not have at hand the actual date but it should be later than Solferino, closer to the FPW. |

Red is ok. The Zouaves are often shown in paintings wearing white trousers on campaign, even in the Franco-Prussian War. Red was the dress uniform and also could be worn on campaign. I am not sure if the white undress uniform was worn by the guard Zouaves on campaign. |

Thanks, I'll go with red for the Guard Zouaves and white for the remaining Zouaves units then, just so they are easier to differentiate at distance. I'm gaming in 6mm so it saves peering at tiny unit details on the edge of the bases. |
