Greetings all,

I'd be grateful if someone could enlighten me.

Am I right in thinking some stout soul has produced a book on the English militia at this time, ( or any time- it's a subject of which I am wholly ignorant).

Many Thanks

Yes- English Militia in the Eighteenth Century: The Story of a Political Issue, 1660-1802- JR Western
There is even a book specifically on the Yorkshire militia I believe – I will have a look when I get home if I remember

Depending on what you want there is a fair amount out there. There is, for example, an order of battle for 1805.

Any particular units, or political background or what?

Thanks, all. Paul, a basic understanding of the overall structure of the militia arm woud be useful also the militia order of battlei n England as it evolved between, say, 1750 and 1850. Was it dynamic between periods of war and peace or was it relatively static?

A useful book by J W Fortescue "The County Lieutenancies and the Army 1803-14" PDF link which he describes as an overflow from his mammoth work on the History of the British Army

It covers the various Militia Acts, volunteer system, and lots lots more.

A very good site on the subject.

A subject that is only really well documented in the archives of each Shire or district to which the Militia regiments belonged. It needs a tour de force to bring a precise or even concise history of the Militia and as for the Yeomanry, that would take dedication all of its own to bring to publication.

I posted contemporary miniature portraits, paintings and sketches pertaining to the Militia and Yeomanry units.

You'll find them near the end of this thread together with other volunteer units and a Hamilton-Smith Uniform schematic Militia chart for Britain and Ireland

Although this thread is about the English Militia, two books on the Irish Militia may also be of interest:

Sir Henry McAnally, 'The Irish Militia 1793-1816 – A Social and Military Study', Dublin, Clonmore and Reynolds, 1949

Ivan F. Nelson, 'The Irish Militia 1793-1802 – Ireland's Forgotten Army', Dublin, Four Courts Press, 2007
