Trying to decide whether to go with Essex or Xyston Macedonians. Most of my Ancients are Essex and generally happy with them. I am aware that some of the Xyston figures have crept to become incompatible with Essex. Are the Alexandrian Macedonians one of these lines which are effectively 18mm?

Have a look at War and Empire ancients from Forged in Battle. An excellent range of figures and nice to paint. They are very close to Essex size wise.

Thanks for that, but I still would like to know the answer to my question if anyone can say?

Yes they are closer to 18mm figures.

The FiB figures are a good match for Essex size-wise and have more variety I think as well.

Nearly all my ancients are FiB figures.

The Xyston figures are closer to 18mm, and will not fit well with Essex figures.

I agree that the Forged in Battle figures will match in well with Essex figures. Like the previous poster I have many armies of FIB figures.

Xyston are bigger, nearer 18mm

FiB are close to the Essex Alexandrian. They are great sculpts and variety and also you don't have to drill hands for spears and pikes. Some shields do need attaching though.

I have a few thousand Xyston for this period and I love them but if I was to do it again they would be FiB

Same boat… I have old Essex and Chariot Macedonians and Thracians and want more;)

I just got some Xyston Indians and they were big and took a lot of filing.

I also got Museum Z Greeks and Indians and they are just wonderful.

I'm hoping Museum will make some more and later Greeks but until thrn I am tempted by the FIB range.

Problem with FIB though – do I really need 24 Agrainians? Even for a DBMM army… who came up the bright idea of not selling smaller batches… I will happily blow a hundred bucks on your lead, but 24, really?

Stewards' enquiry!

Pity about the Xyston, as I thought the Macedonians and the Greeks were from the earlier figures which were nearer 15mm before the the scale creep of the Romans. Is this not the case?
