You can use the lists but there are some substantial changes to keep in mind.

1. The points for some of the ratings have changed so use the points in the 2nd Ed rulebook.

2. Quite a few of the lists have been modified with respect to the rating of the troops and the number of bases that are allowed. This is a result from lots of research and gameplay over the years.

3. Artillery is being handled slightly differently when it comes to the total number of bases that are allowed.

I have a spreadsheet that does the Orbat calls (and displays them rather prettily) so just update the points in that?

Are the troop terms (elan etc) comparable?

I'm not willing to junk £75.00 GBP worth of books

Unless you are playing competitions, then the 1st edition army list books are fine. Just make the adjustments that Desert Rat mentioned – the main one being the number of artillery bases permitted.
The terms are the same as far as I can tell.
