"During World War II, captured soldiers became POW s (Prisoners of War) and were detained in camps. But what happened to captured equipment, such as guns, tanks, artillery, airplanes, clothing, food and so forth? Captured equipment could be very useful, and all through history military forces have been making use of things taken from the enemy. Sometimes the enemy's weapons were of a better quality. They might be easy to capture and so were plentiful. There were drawbacks too, however. It might be difficult to find spare parts for captured weapons and vehicles. Also, soldiers using captured weapons might be mistaken for the enemy, and shot at! They often painted them with large markings so they could be easily recognised…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Very interesting. Since the Sherman was the most mechanically reliable tank of WWII, it is not surprising that captured Shermans were used by the Germans. From the pictures it appears the majority of captured Shermans were captured from the Brits? So, how many gamers used Shermans with German markings in their games? |

WWII US industry provided tanks for EVERYONE. And my German opponents are allowed Shermans the day I as an American get the use of captured 88's. |

In the ETO the 79th Field Artillery Battalion (Provisional) was formed from personnel of the 79th and 179th Field Artillery Groups to fire captured German artillery pieces during the height of the ammunition shortage. Similarly, the 244th Field Artillery Battalion was temporarily equipped with a miscellany of captured German 88mm guns and 105mm and 150mm howitzers. |

I already knew they had them, Wolfhag. That was my point: allowing captured equipment opens up a number of possibilities. Also, fine for me if I draw up a scenario. But all you army list and points people tell me how many rules have provision for either one. (Nowhere in your 50 page books with campaign supplements and army codexes? I thought not.) Truthfully, I prefer to avoid both. The battles are more interesting if each army has unique weapons and doctrine. But historical is not the same as interesting, and both army lists and points systems tend to have troubles with rare and unique units. We used to call this the "Guard Cossack Problem." |
