My Marines never lasted even one battle. So when they talk of Commanders 1000 years old all I can think of is them sitting in there safe battle barge when the real fighting takes place below.
Another thread fun to read is " Hollywood Marines " sorry I don't have the link.

Indeed

While I did not set out to collect Imperial Marines for a number of reasons I wound up with a bunch of them, so I painted up two chapters – one are a homebrew chapter who essentially are Reasonable Marines (green armour, use camo, etc) – the second, though, are those bad boys in yellow and red, yes indeed, the Angry Marines!

All I have is in Epic scale. And a force of every 40K Army in this 6mm scale. I use nothing but tactical/camo military colors on all may SMs, IG, etc. grin

I just googled 'hollywood marines', it's actually "Movie Marines".

I think the idea is GW SMs are tough enough and stand as some great thing that they as supposed to be seen and even stand out.

It's a bit like RoboCop. As a beacon of justice and an good example to all citizens, he stands out for all to see. (Unlike the recent wimp, Imposter!)

The Marines also stand out better in the mag's and on boxes. The idea of camouflage is to blend into the background, not good for your (now) flagship product line.

Yes, I read all the GW fluff/"propaganda". Started with GW in '89. But I'm old school and an old former Grunt. Can't imagine running around on a battlefield in PA in circus colors … evil grin "Anything that can be seen, can be hit, anything that can be hit can be killed." huh?

I'm of the mind that by painting SMs, etc. in circus colors attracts younger gamers and those that like "bright shiny things" … evil grin A good marketing tool to attract a wider buying universe. And bottom line WH40K is not Sci-fi but Fantasy set waaaay in the future.

All that being said, anyone should paint and play with their toy soldiers as they wish. Regardless of GW, etc. But if you paint your SMs in circus colors I may make fun of ya !!! laugh

Warhammer is basically over the top technofantasy with demigods and superhumans set apart from the mere mortals. It isn't for everyone, to be sure. It could have evolved differently, for sure.

Also @JMcCarroll, back in first edition they mentioned how it was possible for junior officers like Lieutenants to have better stats than high ranking officers purely because the latter spent most of their time in the rear rather than on the front lines.

Remember that pre 20th century most modern soldiers wore blue red and white. Carried coloured banners too.

Also when going up against the likes of Tau, necrons, even Tyranids, it probably doesn't matter what colours you wear, they can still sense or scan you anyway. In this case your colours make you easier to detect and identify to your own troops.

Tau and nids use camouflage paint or skin and have special units that can all but vanish visually, like the lictor. However they are not the least human.

Again, like RoboCop, the SMs are supposed to stand out. This would help no end when fighting alongside guardsmen. Guardsmen who some have brightly coloured uniforms and carry banners. Most, though are camouflaged, as a basic human is pretty fragile and feels better if he thinks the enemy heat scanner or highly evolved sense of smell can't see him.

To prove the point, as much as I care, I don't believe there are rules for common camo colours in 40k???

Paint them as you wish, but there isn't anything wrong with the studio schemes, given the context.

Although you can use camo to fool your real life opponent. Hence my Escher with two swords dressed in black and grey. Pop her in a corner early on and ignore her until she pulls a Rambo from the shadows.

I don't play 40K only Epic … And besides since '89 the 40K[and Epic] rules have changed so many times. And I do remember seeing pics in the early days with SMs in camo.

My IG are in tactical/camo colors too.

As far as context, even with Epic we "cherry-pick" what we like and don't … not only rules but fluff …

So yes, one can paint his/her toys as they like. And do … some paint'm in circus colors … some in tac/camo. evil grin

There is nothing that can convince me to paint my "toys" in circus colors. huh? But that's me …

I mostly agree with painting minis in camo colors. But I also have some thoughts regarding other colors, because I think different and unusual colors may work.
1) Bulls do not see the red color, they are color-blinded. Aliens may be too, so for them, anything can be in camo.
2) Some planets may have red flora, so army vehicles painted with red can help, while green is a mark for death. In the same way, because of chemical components etc., in atmosphere of other planets, the sky may appear to be, let us say, green, as for us is blue, so aircraft may adopt green color as background. I think the background story of the wargame you play may help in deciding what camo to use. Adeptus Astartes adopt many colors, depending on the environment they fight.
3) Advanced tech may turn the camo into nothing more than an obsolete defence measure.

1) Yes, and IIRC so are deer … So unless you know for sure … camo is a good option.

2) Yes, And the bottom line is you adapt your camo to the environment. We had Over Whites for snow, Desert Camo, Jungle Camo, etc., etc.

3) Maybe … Better to be safe than dead …
