I was inspired by a post I found at an obscure blog [well, obscure to me, anyway] reviewing 1:3000 ships by Forged in Battle, and am getting a bunch. link link These little beauties are perfect for squadron fights, and I am considering going up a full level from ship-to-ship to squadron fights. I want an overall squadron per player, but some bits of individualization for ships [which affects things]. Interested in command and control, and captains taking off against orders! Most of all, I want sailing, sailing sailing. I grew up sailing, raced yachts in my 20s [hello near death experiences] and really want a game that captures sailing. Most of all, I want players to be able to try to win thru sailing. Any games like that out there? Am I asking too much?? |

Take a look at Jeff (the War Artisan) Knudsen's various age of sail rules here: warartisan.com/rules All of Jeff's rules are, IMHO, well designed and he uses some very interesting and clever mechanisms to model the sorts of problems faced by the various levels of command in the age of sail-his different rules model different aspects of ship combat or command levels. I'm a big fan of all of Jeff's rules; your milage, of course, may differ. Fortunately, as Jeff offers his naval rules as free pdfs, you can try them yourself and arrive at your own opinion. From your description, it seems likely that you want Jeff's "Admirals" rules, but I'd give them all a try. |

Jeff's stuff looks great and price is right! David Manley has a set with A&A games called "Grand Fleet Actions in the Age of Sail" From A and A Engineering. I have their predread rules and altho they are not my exact cup of tea they are loaded with historical details and flavor. I'm hoping these might also. anyone heard of Seawar 1805? |
